Fun, loving and energetic. That is how pianist Harry Hermance is described by those who knew him. To commemorate his memory, The Beckett School of Music will host a benefit concert Sunday, Feb. 17 to support a scholarship fund being established to honor Herâ€" mance, who died tragically in the fall of 1990. . Marjorie Beckett, director of the Beckett School of Music, hopes the fund will further his memory in the Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo area. ‘‘Harry was just fabulous. He could really project the music and his love for it,‘‘ she says. She later accepted the task of folk artist at the age of 16 from the encouragâ€" ment of Lorna Bergey of the Pennsylvania German Historical Society. She went on to study calligraphy and fraktur at the University of Waterloo. Today Eby practices out of her Cambridge home, designing and lettering certificates and updating bibles and family trees. She has also, passed along her enthuâ€" siagm for this art through workâ€" shops and demonstrations she has conducted across Ontario. Bach and Chopin. Hermance himself had been working on Bach‘s French Suites shortly before he died. His father writes that the Harry Hermance Prize has been established ‘‘In honor of Harry‘s strength of commitment to the development of his musical talent.‘‘ He hopes the prize will help to recognize other young people who demonstrate a similar commitment to music.
