He could have gone the way of the "major label" - been tempted to alter his music to suit the powers that be at big record companies. who, in their infinite wisdom. felt his classic backwoods blues style "You had to be in tune with what was big on AM radio, and unfortunately, that was disco," James says. 'That's not what I do. I don't care what's on AM radio. I'm not putting it down, but it's not me." Unfortunately, James was labelled "difficult to work with" try record companies, and so he independently recorded a few albums which he was able to distribute to record stores across would sound better with a disbo But no. Paul James has main. tained his dignity, and has carried on for the past 22 years. doing it the way he's wanted to - simple, uncomplicated, bluesy. In the early '70s, the Toronto- born blues musician thought he'd earned his big break when he landed a deal with a major NF cording company. "I did a lot ot touting, and record stores will stock your albums it you perform in their city. It was a lot of work. but it was what I wanted to do."
