‘ _ PAGE 38 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1990 A student of Waterloo Collegiate Institute before finishing off his high school football with the Bluevale Collegiate Institute Knights, Brenner has been quite a bonus for WLU coach Rich Newbrough, who‘s excited about the youngster‘s capabilities. Just making the 45â€" man roster in his first year is an accomplishâ€" ment in itself, but Newbrough isn‘t contented just having this sixâ€"footâ€"three 220â€"pound fullâ€" back watching the game idly from the sideâ€" lines. Instead, he uses Brenner‘s speed and strength on those doâ€"orâ€"die short yardage offence situtations. Then there‘s the travelling man himself, Paul Bennett, who was with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, Toronto Argos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 1976 Bennett‘s speed and sure hands enabled him to set the CIAU with most punt return touchdowns in a season with five, along with 686 punt return yards in a ‘season. Both records stand firm today. So, knowing about individual tradition, as well as the team tradition with its four Yates Cup titles â€" one while the school was still called Waterloo Lutheran University in 1972 â€" there has to be a lot going through the mind of a hometownâ€"rookie fullback Craig Brenner. "I wouldn‘t hesitate in throwing him in the game. He‘s a dresser on this 45â€"man roster," said WLU coach Rich Newbrough. In his last season of high school ball he missed most of the season with a knee injury, and admits today that once in a while he feels a twinge where he suffered the injury, but he‘s not going to let it effect his performance. _ Brenner, who also played senior ball for Waterloo C.I., has spent most of his high school life following the Hawks, hoping that someday he‘d be wearing the purple and gold colors. He‘s aware of the tradition behind the team and respects everything that goes into making a winning program. Coming from high school to university footâ€" ball has been quite an adjustment for Brenner, who wasn‘t sure what to expect at training 32 yards and another 30 yards. However N i xt year he‘s going to Riive on for Brenner. "There‘s no way he should be sitting on the bench. We‘re going to have to look at our depth chart and find him a position out there." "When I first came here I thought I was going to be a linebacker, but I‘ll play any position they decide to put me," Brenner said. Yet, Brenner, who played a lot of defence in high school ball, admits he loves to get out there and hit. "I like to hit and when on short yardage they use me as a blocker." "I don‘t let it bother me, just as long as I get to play. That‘s what it‘s all about." amassed 62 yard of offence on three carries for 32 yards and| another 30 yards.
