PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, Sports Injuries could play a key role in the fate of two Waterloo high school senior football teams. Althougth both victorious in their games last week, Bluevale Knight coach Bob Serviss, as well as Waterloo Viking coach Gord Hunter, have players who will definately miss games this week, and possibly the rest of the season. Knights, 37â€"14 winners over the Galt Ghosts on Friday, lost wide receiver Travis Gowland for the season. Gowland was knocked out and taken by ambulance to the hospital. He suffered a concussion and according to Serviss, won‘t be back this season. "Once something like that happens it‘s out of your hands. I‘m happy the doctor told him to forget about playing this season," Serviss said. Putting a player back in the game a few weeks down the road after suffering such a serious injury would put a lot of responsibility on the "A couple of more injuries to our twoâ€"way players and we could be in a lot of trouble," Hunter said. With the injuries to Gowland, along with the seasonâ€"ending leg injury to allâ€"star running back Jody Mitchell, Knights are counting on veteran running back Beny Litke as well as rookie Adam Hewson. In his first game Hewson, up from the juniors, had a rough start, but rebounded in the win over Galt on Friday. "Hewson really came up big. He looked like a different back than he In Cambridge on Friday the Vikings may have rolled over the Glenview Park Panthers 27â€"12, but in doing so suffered a double whammy in losing twoâ€"way lineman Martin Barta. Heading into the contest they were without star running back Jody Catalan, who missed the game as a result of hamstring injury. â€" THE HIGH COST OF VICTORY The trouble with being the new kids on the block is that everybody wants to have a piece of you. s That pretty well sums it up for the Resurrection Phoenix and the St. David Celtics senior football teams of the newly formed District 8 Athletic Associâ€" ation. Both teams, with a 0â€"2 (wonâ€"loss) record this season, have taken their lumps earlier this season. One of them will be facing the grim reality that late Friday afternoon at St. David field one of them will be 0â€"3. Ugh! That‘s right, Friday afternoon, not Newest football teams prepare to do battle Thursday night at Seagram Stadium where the game was originally to be played. The Wilfrid Laurier Unversity Golden hawks football team will be meeting Western Mustangs instead forcâ€" ing the high school game to be played at was in his first game." Serviss also gave quarterback Chris Branov a lot of credit as well as receiver Jason Meier. Knight‘s (1â€"1) toughest game of the season will be this Friday in Bridgeport against the 2â€"0 (wonâ€"loss) St. Mary‘s Eagles. In the victory over the Ghosts the Vikings made several errors, including a fumble in the end zone resulting in a Ghost touchdown, as well as a few secondâ€"half fumbles. We may have put 37 points on the board, but we made quite a few mistakes out there. We‘re going to have to play erroriess ball." The Vikings (2â€"0) hope to increase their record to 3â€"0 on Friday when they meet the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo C.1. Raiders at Cherry Park. Raiders, defeating the winless St. David Celtics for their first win in two starts this season, lost big to the Southwood Sabres last week, but Hunter is expecting a much closer game this time around. ‘"The last thing we should be is over confident. "With our injuries to key players we lack the depth out there. Quarterback Ryan Hume is young, but we have some experienced backs, so we‘re not asking him to do too much right now." What does concern Hunter are the throwing abilites of Raider quarterback Luke Totzke who gave the Vikings more than their share of problems in last year‘s final game of the regular season. In the Bluevale win Litke paced the Knights with three touchdowns while Hewson added two touchdowns. SpirosAnastasakis added seven points. Kevin Mellow and Fred Haken each scored GCI tWuchdowns. Steve Dean led WCI with two touchdowns over Clenview Park while Rob Sproat and Doug MacFarlane had one scoring major each. "I know KCI has made a lot of improvements and I can remember the trouble we had with their passing game last season. They have a good quarterback and he‘ll probably come out throwing again." St. David field. "Hey, I‘m really disappointed. I was looking forward to playing a Thursday night game," admitted Celtic coach David Aldworth. Even Phoenix coach Jamie McKinnon was hoping for a Thursday nighter which would have attracted at a great majority of fans from Resurrection. Instead, it will be a St. David crowd for at least the first half of the game. And when looking at the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, the plus has to go to the Celtics, offensively as well as defensively. Although the Phoenix have Trevor ‘"Terminator" Henke quarterbacking the team, he and his offensive line will have their hands full in trying to contain inside linebacker Shawn Brown, corner linebackerâ€"Rob Dankowski, safety Tim Lukezic and defensive end Jeff Osborne. Offensively, coach Aldworth can rotate quarterbacks using either Simon Bell or Osborne. As a running back, Osborne has two touchdowns so far this season. It was homecoming week at Wilfrid Laurier University last week and while these students appear to be having a great time, it wasn‘t so great for the football Golden Hawks as they were defeated 32â€"14 by the fifthâ€"ranked University of Toâ€" ronto Blues at Seagram Stadiâ€" um. Elsewhere in the league Warriors 24â€"14.
