In the late 1970s, the music scene in Moncton, New Brunswick had little to offer four young musicians who refused to conform to the topâ€"40 disco brand of dance music poplular in local clubs. So members of Basic English, all childâ€" hood buddies, secluded themselves in baseâ€" ments and garages, creating their own circle of alternative music enthusiasts. "In New Brunswick, you are a little out of the mainstream, so you‘re dealing with a mentality that isn‘t really receptive to a lot of new music," says Basic English guitarâ€" ist/songwriter John Davis. "We were disâ€" covering a lot of new music. The band, drumm@r Roger Leblanc, vocalist Tim Armour, bassist John Graâ€" ham and Davis, were gettm%:':ry interestâ€" ed in the punk rock scene. The following year, Basic English was voted Best Nonreâ€" cording Artist for CFNY‘s CASBY awards, chosen band of the year by the Toronto Star, and were one of three bands invited to perform at the first annual Toronto Music Awards. This year saw the release of their debut album, Sweet Panic, released through WEA Music of Canada/Risque Disque, featuring the single Sentimental Highway.
