PAGE 26 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY MAY 10, Advertising helps you compare. The real function of vehicle shock absorbers is sometimes misunderstood. Their vital role is to MODERATE or DAMPEN the natural tendency of the automotive springs to toss the vehicle up and down. To provide this smothering effect and to make its important contribution to a better controlled ride, a shock absorber is designed as a sealed metal cylinder filled with hydraulic oil. A piston with a carefully calculated number and size of holes in its face is forced in and out through the oil. The piston is firmly attached to a shaft that extends upward through the sealed top end of the cylinder. To protect the polished shaft from the hostile elements there is usually a cylindrical steel shell fastened to the outer end of the shaft. This shell slides around the hydraulic cylinder as the piston is pushed all the way in. Both the top and the bottom ends of the schock absorber have a mounting arrangement that incorporates some type of rubber bushings. The top end generally fastens to a stationery part of the vehicle frame or body while the bottom end is attached to some part of the suspension system The latest version of shock absorbers are the ‘Gasâ€"charged Shocks‘ we keep hearing about. These are a fairly common type of a hydraulic shock absorber with a special twist. There is a sealed capsule filled with nitrogen gas at the bottom of the oilâ€"filled hydraulic chamber. The bit of extra flexibility, or compressibility, of gas compared to oil provides more sensitive reacâ€" tions to suspension movements and a measurâ€" ably improved ride control. These "overachievers‘ in the shock absorber family come at about $10 premium each over and above the ordinary shock price. _ Just like their "common‘"‘ cousins, the gas charged shocks come with a free replacement warranty when installed by the advertiser. This warranty generally applies as long as you The shock absorber story (formerly Roval Trust) 4 doors south of our present location Waterioo, Ont. None of the shock absorbers we discussed have the ability to BOOST the tiring and sagging vehicle springs. There are special types of shock absorbers in the market that fill that particular requirement. One type is sometimes called Overloader. It has a coil spring encasing a moreâ€"orâ€"less mormal shock absorber with circular metal shoulders welded to both ends of the shock that sandwich the coil spring between them. The more the vehicle springs tend to sag under load, the more help the overloader will provide while still functioning as a conventional shock absorâ€" ber. Similar results can be achieved with the adjustable air shocks. Once again we are looking at a standard shock with a wrinkle. The auxiliary spring function in this case is taken up by a sealed air chamber that shares part of the area of the oil filled hydraulic cylinder. Air can be pumped into this chamber through a system of vinyl tubing and a tireâ€" type valve. Adding air to this type of shock will cause the rear of the vehicle to raise itself on its suspension. Bleeding the air off will cause it to return to the original position. An automatic level control is similar to the adjustable air shock system. The added sophisâ€" tication includes a small air compressor and an electronic sensor that reacts to the suspension levels. As the rear of the car lowers itself under load the sensor triggers the compressor to increase the air pressure in the shocks to compensate. The process will reverse itself as the weight in the vehicle is reduced.
