The muscle car market all but died in 1973 during the OPEC crisis and completely new vehicle market began to develop. Perhaps we should first consider some backâ€" ground facts. By adding lead to gasoline the oil industry achieved two objectives: 1. They raised the octane rating to the needed level effectively and at relatively little expense. High octane gasolines were the diet required to feed the popular and proliferating muscle cars of the 1950s and ‘60s. 2. As a side effect, the lead content residue after combustion formed a protective coating â€" somewhat like Teflon â€" on valves and valve seats, especially the exhaust valves and seats. Because of this helpful coating there was no need for expensive alloys for the manufacture of valves and seats. I received the following note from a reader: I have some concern regarding the phasing out of leaded gasolines two years from now. I have two boat motors and three tractors that require leaded gas. I recently read a report by a consumer group which stated that if unleaded fuel is used in engines meant for leaded fuel, within six months the engine would probably have to be overhauled. I wonder if it would be possible for you to address my concern in one of your future columns. ANSWERS: Leaded or nonâ€"leaded gas SINCE 1925 Mon â€"Tues. 9â€"5:30, (Closed Wednesdays), Thurs. & Fri. 9â€"9, Sat. 9â€"5 (across from Kitchener Farmers‘ Mérï¬Ã©t)j 149.95 149.95 579â€"BIKE .« 139.99 139.99 159.99 159.99 159.99 169.99 169.99 109.99 119.99 119.99 A corrective action would essentially entail a valve job. All valves would have to be replaced with special alloy or sodiumâ€"filled valves and a set of hardened valve seats would have to be machined into the existing valve seat openings in the cylinder heads. That brings me to the question of what the problems would be if one used unleaded gasoline in an engine designed for leaded fuel. The engine would suffer gradual loss of comâ€" pression due to burning of exhaust valves and seats â€" probably within 5,000â€"7,000 miles of normal use. A sustained heavy strain on the engine would likely accelerate the process. Most of my readers will recall the general scramble of car manufacturers to come up with compact cars and, at the same time, to modify all exisiting car and truck engines to accept unleaded fuel and to comply with the new environmental regulations. Very few car and truck engines produced after 1973 were offered to the public with a warning to use leaded gasoline ONLY. The vast majority of vehicle manufacturers resorted to alloy valves and seats to digest the unleaded fuel without problems. All of the above bicycles come in a box and require some assembly. 30 Day parts warranty included. Lifetime warranty on the frames.
