Chronicie Staff Just what the dickens has happened to Nick Noite? Is this the same blond statuesque man who wowed audiences with his acting stint on the longâ€"running television miniâ€"series Rich Man, Poor Man? How can he be the big, bulky, seeminglyâ€"illiterate man who portrays notorious bank robber Lucas in Touchstone Pictures recent release of Three Fugitives? It wouldn‘t be so bad if he managed to win the audience over with an image of a big, dumb, loveable guy who just wants to be loved. Instead, Nolte is overshadowed by Martin Short, who plays Lucas‘ neurotic counterpart Perry, and little sixâ€"yearâ€"old Sarah Rowland Doroff, who is cast as Perry‘s daughter Meg. It doesn‘t really make sense when you compare Nolte‘s acting experience with Short‘s and Doroff‘s. But this guy seems to be on a fast slide down the proverbial acting bannister The movie begins as Lucas is released from prison, manned with a cheque and promising to stay on the straight and narrow. All goes well until Ned Perry (Short) squeiches any hope of Lucas becoming a lawâ€"abiding citizen when he bursts into the bank and announces he is there to rob it. At first, Lucas is amused by Perry‘s PAGE 20 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 1989 Wendy Somerviile mwmmmuumummummwmw wmmmmmuummm.mmnmmumuma hopeless attempts to retrieve TWO HEARTS _ BEATING AS ONE... by strengthening yours you will be able to strengthen someone elses. As both of them stumble out of the bank, gun pointed, the police mistakenly take Lucas to be the robber and Perry to be the victim. When Lucas sees how Perry is screwing up the robbery, he takes charge and masterâ€" minds duo‘s escape. Both on the run now, they meet up with Perry‘s adorable daughter, who hasn‘t spoken since her mother died two years before, and the adventure begins. The relationship the three build should have all the makings of a wonderful exploration how very different characters can become compatible when faced with survival. Instead, lines like "I promise, I‘l bring you a cake with double icing" from Lucas, are almost comical. There is no doubt, Doroff‘s uncanny ability to melt even the toughest character with one of her wideâ€"eyed stares and Short‘s gift for physical comedy, are the movies only saving grace. Nolte should stick to the weight room â€" he spent a lot of time there before the movie was shot, building up his upper body so that he could throw Short around a lot. Short was apparently so obliging that he hardly complained about being tossed about so much. _ Too bad. If Short had complained some more, maybe the critics would have eased up a bit on Noite. It seems he is being compared to a California Raisin on steroids. + DIE HARD « PRESIDIO « DEAD POOL e RED HEAT * BULL DURHKHAM 99° Coupon Weekend March 4 & 5 Buy 10â€"100 movie credits for 99* each.
