PAGE 30 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28. 1988 Chronicle Staft An attempt by the Waterloo UpTown Business Improveâ€" ment Area (BIA) to move its Oktoberfest tent across the street to the Labatt‘s property was recently rejected by Kâ€" W Oktoberfest Inc The group made a request to Oktoberfest General Manager Bill Stewart Sept. 14, said Kathryn LeGros, the BIA coâ€"ordinator. R Stewart rejected the idea, said LeGros, citing developâ€" ments of the last two months. Labatt‘s has pubjicly criticized Oktoberfest Inc. for refusing the brewery permission to participate in the Oct 10 Oktoberfest parade. Additionally, Molson breweries is sponsoring Oktoberfest, paying $1.2 million over four years for the privilege of having its Lowenbrau label promoted as an "official beer" at the festivities. Labatt‘s, which employs around 300 people in its Waterloo plant, has criticized Oktoberfest officials for extending last year‘s contract with Molson‘s without first approaching the local brewery. The BIA places an information tent in Heritage Park at the corner of King and William Streets for the festivities. The tent is officially sanctioned by Oktoberfest Inc. The official status entitles the group to publicity and the use of Oktoberfest people in staffing the tent. The tent has been coâ€"sponsored by Labatt‘s for the past four vears. Ter'r_v Holiohan. who chairs the BIA, said the group _ Stewart agreed that bad biood between Laball s an wished to move the tent onto the Labatt property to save Oktoberfest Inc. may have had a part in his decision on heating costs. The BIA takes pride in providing a nonâ€" ‘"Sure," he said. ‘‘They are not one of our major sponsors BIA pays for bad blood between Kâ€"W Oktoberfest and Labatt‘s o Ts aanicem cher tnroome masns NEXT COURSE BEGINS SATURDAY COURSES OCT. 15th (4 weeks) 9 a m.â€"3:30 p.m. Kitchener & Waterioo This paper can be recycled FINALLY 150 WEBER ST. I think we‘re looking forward to a longâ€"term relationiship with Oktoberfest." Oktoberfest‘s Stewart said his decision was based on the fact that there is not enough space on the Labatt‘s property for both the BIA tent and a Multiculturefest ‘88 tent which is coâ€"sponsored by Labatt‘s. Stewart also cited the proposed use of alcohol in the BIA tent, and the lastâ€"minute nature of the request. "You go a whole year planning this thing, you just can‘t change," he said. The BIA never intended to serve alcohol in its tent, said LeGros. ‘"There was never any talk of that. There was never any mention of a change in purpose for the tent." Furthermore, said LeGros, at the meeting with the BIA, Stewart did not express concern over the space limitations. ‘‘There was room." The BIA tent was not going to be affiliated with the Multiculturefest, she said. "It was going to be separate tents and the usual cultural and general events display." Ted Land, the regional promotions coâ€"ordinator for Labatt‘s, said the Oktoberfest decision is a result of their connections to Molson‘s. "The effect is only to rob the BIA of any opportunity to cut costs." He added the brewery, which is a member of the BIA, will continue to pay for the tent. Stewart agreed that bad blood between Labatt‘s and Oktoberfest Inc. may have had a part in his decision. WE‘LL GET YOU ROLLING! YOoU DON‘T HAVE TO GO OUT OF TOWN FOR YOUR BEST DEAL!
