The Ontario Court of Appeal‘s deciâ€" sion that it is unconstitutional to require students to recite the Lord‘s Prayer in public schools has left the Waterloo country board of education, and other boards across the province, in a state of confusion, said the Waterloo board chairman, Tuesday. "Everybody at the present time is in limbo," said chairman Elizabeth Witâ€" mer. Administration is awaiting diâ€" rection from the ministry of education to know how to respond to the court‘s By midâ€"Tuesday administration had consulted its lawyer, a law office in Toronto, the Sudbury board of educaâ€" tion, and the ministry of education to determine a course of action within its schools. "Until we receive direction from the ministry of education we should really be continuing with the practice because there‘s been no noâ€" tice from anyone to do differently," Witmer said. The principals were told scripture readings or other "suitable" readings could still be used. Lord‘s Prayer and other prayers could be used and the use of the national anthem was not in question. Though some trustees felt the board should make provision for the recognition of other religions‘ prayâ€" ers, the board ultimately decided to wait for the outcome of this court case. The appeal may be taken to the Supreme Court of Canada. Whatever the outcome, Witmer said, those disappointed with the decision may have to turn to the provincial government as the issue has been removed beyond the local board‘s jurisdiction.
