I‘m still capable of playing for another year or two, but my reflexes and anticipation aren‘t as quick as they once were. I‘ll know when to stop," said the 51â€"yearâ€"old playing president of the Waterloo Cricket Club. "I would like to represent Canada in a master‘s tournament in Denmark next year â€" and then I‘ll retire. I should be able to last that long." Rowe‘s departure from the local cricket scene will draw the curtains on a truly remarkable era for the Waterloo club, one that began 35 years ago in the summer of 1953. It was in the spring of that year that Rowe and his family migrated to Canada from their native Jamaica. "I really didn‘t expect to find people playing cricket in Canada. I even gave away all my cricket equipment before we moved," he recalled. Two months later, at the age of 16, "That‘s what I really enjoy about the game," said Rowe. he wished he hadn‘t. "My father ran into a fella, found out about the club, and then came home and told me about it. I went out to see what it was like and I‘ve been there ever since." Although Rowe‘s 35th anniversary with the club actually took place last month, the club celebrated the occaâ€" sion Sunday by staging a game at Waterloo Park that reunited many of the people that have played the game with or against Rowe over the years. Needless to say, Rowe was thrilled with the gesture. "It‘s very exciting for me. After all, it only happens once." Rowe currently plays in the 10â€"team Southern Ontario Cricket Associaâ€" tion, a competitive league comprised of clubs from Kâ€"W to Detroit, Mich.
