As David Bell, of 37 Roosevelt Avenue surveys his front garden lined disappointment with the conditions Mother Nature has meted out. Sure the roses on the 63 bushes do not hold their br as long as he‘d like them to, but that is to be expected. Bell was awarded last week the Margaret: Putman Memorial trophy for the best rose garden in the city; a competition sponsored by the Waterâ€" loo Horticultural Society. Of the 11 gardens judged, Bell‘s combination of floribunda, grandifliora and tea roses was cited for its "massive show of color in his well cared for and placed second in the competition. Runner up is Ronald Taylor, 129 Belmont Avenue, and third place was awarded to Mrs. Tony Hergott of 525 Glenforest Drive. Bell recalled one of the first things he did when he moved to his Roosevelt Avenue home 22 years ago was to plant rose bushes. He‘s dabbled in rose gardening ever since, but beâ€" cause of health problems he never developed extensive gardens. Since his retirement three years ago he has spent more time gardening, this year adding 25 new bushes. His first love is the beautiful colors throughout the garden.
