Local lawyer Steve Woodworth was the big winner in an appeal last Thursday to the Liberal Party of Canada Ontario. Two rulings went in Woodworth's favor - a re-affirmation of July 12 as the date for choosing thelocal federal representative for the next federal election, and acceptance of Woodworth's list of new member- ships despite his missing the Jute 12 deadline by six minutes. The executive of the riding association argued unsuccessfully, with the support of candidates other than Woodworth, that the choosing of a nomination ate was a local matter, and should not be dictated by the party headquarters. Woodworth, a local lawyer and member of the Christian Legal Fellowship, said he is convinced a federal election will be called for the fall. "lt has never made sense to me that you take a risk with the election process to allow one or more candidates an advantage." Riding association president John Moore said he was "a little surprised" by the decision of the party to allow Woodworth's approximately 600 new memberships. _ "The good news is that 600 people who would not be able to vote will now be able to vote. However, I understand the disappointment of the other candidates." The decision was not consistent with past party practice, said Moore, and allowed Woodworth awess to the membership lists of other candidates while they in turn had no access to his until Saturday. Moore, resigned the riding presidency in early June over what he described as "dictatorial" party interference in forcing synomina- tion date despite an executive preference for a September ate. He was later reappointed by the executive. Eight-year-old Cheryl Munroe of Waterloo holds back her hair " University of Waterloo student Yvonne Terhaerdt puts fina touches to her tace painting. The big loser in the appeal may be candidate John Roberts, a former Trudeau cabinet minister who announced June 22 he would seek the nomination, after weeks of reflecting on the matter. Roberts was approached in May by a group of local Liberals who felt it could take a high-recognition candidate such as Roberts to unseat Progressive Conservative WP. Walter McLean who has represented Waterloo riding since 1979. Nick Gehl, a Roberts supporter, said he is appealing the nomination date ruling to the executive committee of the Liberal Party. "What did surprise me is they accepted the late memberships, which they haven't done before in other ridings." A September date for the nomination meeting would allow Roberts time to sell memberships. The membership deadline is one month prior to the nomination meeting. “Ingistiéally, it would be difrscult" for Roberta to stay in the race if the July 12 nomination date is not overturned, he said. "lt was quite a "Glation to find out they were not going to accept the authu'ity of the local riding association. "Ther/in accepting Mr. Woodworth's memberships they seem to be favoring one candidate. I guess we'll have to live with it." Candidate Ruby Weber, an Elmira accountant said she was not surprised by the July 12 nomination date. "they don't seem" to be willing to'nocept the rights of.the local association to make a decision on that matter. Candidate Kelly-Leigh Thomas, a Waterloo veterinarian, said she was "stunned" by the appeal decisions. Roberts is unavailable for comment this week, as he is vacationing in New Zealand. He will be teaching at the Australian National University until August. tmter.tkaetetpttrrto
