When the alternatives of the current atâ€"large system and a ward system were explained to the 1,009 respondents in the survey, 61 per cent choose the ward system, while 28 per cent choose an atâ€"large system. Respondents were first asked whether they favor or oppose the current method of electing councillors. Of the sample, 52 per cent were in favor, 19 per cent opposed, and 30 per cent had no opinion. "It‘s much easier to agree with statements supporting the status quo," city council was told Monday by Jim Matsui, viceâ€"president of Environics Research Group Limited of Toronto. When wards were presented as an alternative, 51 per cent of respondents who originally supported the current atâ€"large system switched their preference to the ward system. ‘"The decision is there twoâ€"toâ€"one in favor of the ward system once they‘ve been educated about it," said Matsui. "It‘s a process which might be repeated in the community over the next several months." f Matsui told council, "It‘s important to get the awareness levels up. "If you want people to participate in a review of the electoral system, you‘d expect them to make an informed decision." Residents who claimed to be very likely to vote in the next election are more likely to support the current system. However, support for the ward system remains at the 61 per cent level regardless of the likelihood Students from Elizabeth Zle?ler school, accompanied by teacher Doug Ross, hold up one of the stencils used to paint musical instruments and notes on sidewalks in Uptown Waterloo in preparation for the annual Sounds of Summer festival this weekend in Waterioo Park.
