Callan Brunker, age 9, climbed down to the reedâ€"covered edge of a mudâ€"hole and threw up a halfâ€"dozen pop cans and bottles to his father, who put them in a plastic garbage bag. along with about a dozen other people were spending a few hours walking and learning about environmental issues in Waterloo. They were participants in the Kâ€"W Moveathon for the Environment, a four hour hike organized by the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG), a group dedicated to research and education on environmental and social Callan Brunker, 9, hauls a pop can from a water hole while on an Environment Week walk last Saturday. Sponsored by the Waterioo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG), the walk examined local environmental issues. Participants examined issues such as renewable energy, depletion of farmland, industrial recycling, waste management, excess packaging, and toxic It was a practical lesson in environmental stewardship for Brunker who, ~«Chronicle Staff Minnie Norman, the Waterloo woman who was the focus of attention when her son sought and won the right to have a granny flat installed in his Colonial Acres yard, has died at the age of 88, one year after she moved in. The pilot project introduced by the Ministry of Housing was a success said her son Ed, in whose yard the flat was installed. "I think it worked out very well. It accomplished the principle things we were looking for and that was to give mother her independence but be close to us and part of the family," said Mr. Norman. The rented flat was approved on a threeâ€"year temporary zoning amendment by Waterloo council in 1986, despite the protests from neighbors concerned about the devaluation of their property. A subsequent Ontario Municipal Board hearing upheld council‘s decision and Mrs. Norman moved into her flat in May 1987. Mr. Norman thinks "some of the heated feelings have faded with time." He added not all the neighbors opposed the preâ€"fab, selfâ€" contained flat. It was a good family experience, Mr. Norman said, which allowed the grandchildren an opportunity to better know their grandmother. "She liked having people around her that way," he added. "It was close enough that we could see her and she could see us but far enough away that she could have her own privacy, her own visitors and her own life," he said. It was especially beneficial after she suffered a stroke several weeks ago which left her weakened but The controversy put Mrs. Norman in national limelight with television broadcasts and reports but she handled the debate well, he said. She had always led a quiet life, Mr. Norman said so "it was quite a step for her to find herself on CBC Journal or the CBC French Acccording to the agreement the flat is removed when the parent of the homeowner dies or moves into other accommodations.
