PAGE 2 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY JUNE 8, 1988 Few Grade 7 students can articulate the effects of a depleting ozone layer as well as Jeremy Steffier can. The Sr!dgu&wmmhmnuufifinuflyinvthe spring demanding the government put a to the use of clorofluorcarbons and to his surprise in midâ€"May he received a letter from the federal environment department responding to his 359â€"signature petition. The threeâ€"page letter signed by a special advisor to the environment department addresses Jeremy‘s concerns and outlines some of the initiatives the government would be undertaking to reduce CFC emisgions. Last week environment minister Tom McMillan anâ€" nounced the government would be taking a tougher stand on the use of CFCs, proposing some of the same initiatives outlined in the letter to Jeremy. Scientific evidence is pointing a finger at these manâ€" made chemicals as the culprits destroying the protective ozone layer found in the earth‘s stratosphere. With subsequent depletion of the ozone layer more of the sun‘s ultraviolet rays will filter through causing sunburns, skin cancer and possibly a weakening of the immune system. McMillan announced a ban on all nonâ€"essential uses of CFCs; chemicals used as propellants, coolants, industrial solvents and a component found in some types of hard foam, such as egg cartons. As part of the pressure to reduce Canada‘s CFC emission, the government will develop with industry codes of practice, emission controls, recycling requirements and mandatory labelling. In a small way Jeremy believes he has encouraged the government to move more quickly on controlling the use of (\&\. FERTILIZER : A Call 884â€"3498 Smmson LAWN PRAY LTD. While Jeremy cannot vote yet, someday he will and he‘ll know what issues are important to him. Reducing the use of CFCs is a small step in the right direction but the government needs to do more, he said. If nothing else, he added, his petition lets the ministry know people in Waterloo are concerned. Jeremy admitted he was surprised to know the governâ€" ment has been making an effort to stop the use of CFCs. "Now that I‘ve heard the government‘s point of view I sort of understand how hard it would be to (ban CFCs)," he said. A sentence from the letter drove the point home to him: "It‘s clear, therefore, that an immediate ban on the production and use of all CFCs and halons (a similarly banned chemical used in air conditioners) would have friends. His mother, Susan, no longer buys aerosol containers and recyles egg cartons and other foam containers. She questions why grocery stores do not take up the initiative and use cardboard trays for meats. Gone are the days when she and her husband, Bob, soak up the sun‘s rays â€" now her family uses a number 15 sun screen. unacceptably high social costs." dJeremy‘s concern has rubbed off on his parents and CFCs. "If only in a little way I helped the minister make a decision I feel good." At the same time he thinks students and parents have developed more of an awareness of the problem through his petition and speeches on the subject. "I think parenits want a better world for their children and the children want a better world for themselves," he PERM COMPLETE............... only A" 203 KING STREET SOUTH WATERLOO (Close to MUTUAL LIFE) 745‘1' PARKING AT REAR OFF JOHN STREET IVY BEAUTY BOUTIQUE COMPLETE HAIR CARE FOR LADIES only 299 745â€"1962 W.C.1.
