Each year the Rotary Club of Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo sponsors a fishing party and picnic for the children at the Rotary Centre. > This year the event will be held May 28 by the wading pool at Waterloo Park, which will be stocked with trout. Research on ‘typical‘ Old Order Mennonite farm homes in 1914 was conducted and a great deal of information as to the way the house looked and functioned was gleaned from the last members of the family who lived in the house in Peter, his wife, Anna, and their large family, immiâ€" grated to Waterloo County from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1819. They built the house about 1820 on lothoftheGarmanCompmy'l‘nc‘tinprenontday Woolwich Township. It was lived in by his descendents for over 150 years until it was moved to Doon Pioneer Village (now Doon Heritage Crossroads) in 1975. In 1986 Regional Council appointed a Project Team to oversee the restoration of the house. Like other similar projects at Doon Heritage Crossroads, the house was to be restored to the early 20th century before the first war. The newlyâ€"restored Peter Martin House at Doon Heri tage Crossroads will be officially opened Sunday, May 29 1988. This ‘tail piece‘ has been recreated and now shows the house as it was at that time, The interior arrangement of rooms reflects the family living arrangements. The house is divided into two living areas â€" the ‘doddy haus‘ is that of the grandparents, and the larger area is that of the younger couple. The Peter Martin House will be interpreted as a typical Old Order farmhouse of 1914. Costumed interpretive staff will provide visitors with informationn about the house and original family, and the Old Order lifestyle in 1914. under the architectural direction of Phil Goldsmith of Quadrangle Architects (Toronto). The construction project has been ‘managed‘ by volunâ€" teer Eddie Bearinger and work has been carried out by members of the local Mennonite Community â€" many of whom are descendants of Peter Martin. Actual construction work involved turning the house so that it faced towards the south and was in a better relationship with the adjacent barn buildings.
