University Heights Wendy Buckley Kitchener Waterloo Philharmonic Choir brings its 1987â€"88 season to a close with an exciting performance of Carl Orff‘s Carmina Burana and Francis Poulenc‘s Gloria, Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. at Centre In The Square. Carmina Burana was an immediate success at its 1937 debut performance in Frankfurt and has since been regarded as one of the most universally popular works by a 20th century "contemporary" composer. Carl Orff used a selection of poems written by 13th century monks of the monastery of Benediktbeuren for his text and set them to music that is dominated by an incessant rhythmic pulse and melodic simplicity. The poems, written in low Latin and early German, mingle Christian piety and pagan hedonism with the directness and innocence of medieval morality. They are an uninhibited celebration of the pleasures of life and love. Divided into three main parts titled "Spring", "In The Tavern" and "Love," Orff‘s work generates exhilaration of both the flesh and the spirit. * For education week at U.H.S.S. we had a display at Westmount Mall showing what we do here in some of our great shops. Many students participated in this offâ€"campus activity. Food services were demonstrating the making of Black Forest cakes and also selling them. Welding was displaying many items made by our students, and our beauty culture shop was offering shoppers the treat of manicures, facials and hair styling. *The Horseback Riding Club will be taking eight students riding on at the Circle Square Ranch in Cambridge. Thanks to Mrs. Hendren for organizing this Francis Poulenc‘s Gloria will be the other featured work in this final performance of the season. Written in 1959 for the Koussevitzy Music Foundation, Gloria is a fresh and novel setting of a familiar text. The text of the Gloria comes from a set of hymns used in the early centuries of the church and was eventually introduced into the Locker Talk Prone & Tichat Outist arders sutyect io senvice charge Philharmonic Choir presents fascinating Carmina Burana * There was a tremendous turnout for our boys‘ sloâ€"pitch Rosemary Landry Henry Ingram e â€"â€"ooooâ€"â€"â€"â€"â€" ol & A\Y BOOK IN PRINT team. Poulenc was known to both imitate and satirize musical traditions. Gloria is one such work that combines convenâ€" tional religious postures with high spirits, resulting in a fascinating blend of both sides of its composer.
