Great WCI numbers The Waterloo collegiate Grade 10 Cayley team composed of Derek Ast- ley, Martin Wainwright and Alex Ruiz, and the Grade 11 Fermat team consisting of Ryoji Shimpoo, Clare Pace and Andrew Bulman Fleming, both placed first in their zone at the 1988 Canadian Mathematics Compet- ition. The Grade 9 Pascal team, made up of Stephanie Chow, Joel Ariaratham and Anne Bulik, placed second in their zone. Each spring an excess of 140,000 students attempt the mathematics contest which is designed to provide enrichment opportunities and an in, tellectual challenge. The Cayley team also placed 12th in the province and 20th in Canada, and the Fermat team was 10th in Ontario and 16th in the country. The Pascal team ranked in the top 5 per cent of all schools.
