Mam Zavaros Chronicle Special Belonging is not a book specirtcally about The Roman Catholic Church, it is about individual Catholics who are questioning what it means to be a Catholic today in the face of such moral dilemmas as divorce, abortion, birth control, artirscial insemination. homosexuality and celibacy. Vardey says that she did not write this book for the clergy, but for herself and the people. Born and raised in England, she was the eldest of rwe children. In the first few chapters she examines her faith as a child, teenager and now as a single woman. She said that we are in the position now where we can speak up for change, whereas a few years ago this was not possible. She feels that change won't come from the Pope, it will happen at a grass roots level in small communities and parishes. While Vardey was with her family in Eng- land, she attended Mass every Sunday. At 21 she emigrated to Canada where she tried to establish church ties, but this was not to be, the Church she attended was cold and its message irrelevant. At this point she admits she became a "lapsed" Catholic. She says she was one of The Drifters, who after leaving school drifted away from everything, at least for awhile. After interviewing clergy and laymen about today's issues, she found conflicting ideas and vast grey areas in their faith and beliefs, Through these interviews and church history 747-1044 as“?! After extensive interviews with women about abortion, women who had had them said they felt it was right at the time but later in view of Catholic doctrine, thought they had committed murder and could no longer take communion. Vardey offers advice to women contemplating abortion to ask, “Is aborting an easier affliction to live with than giving the baby away?" She says the feminist message emphasizes self-de- velopment over self-sacrifice and women now make an effort to protect themselves, not to be servile or helpless. The question of divorce and remarriage is dealt with through the voices of men and women who have chosen secular, other denomination marriages and annulment. We cannot see into the future, but Vardey has left many doors ajar to be opened at a later time. Whether they will be pried from their rusty hinges or swing open with ease, will depend on the forces behind them. #1 Nautilus offers you the best in Nautilus equipment.
