WILFRED D JENKINS, O C HILDE M ENGLISH JOHN J KENDALL KIMBERLV L EVANS MARGARET A HOV Developed by Chinese monks centuries ago, Kung-Fu develops concentration and strength, self-awareness, and ultimately self-corh deuce. "The self-defense comes as a bonus," said Schneider. "The monks believed that mercy comes from strength. With strength, people have the self-confidence to be able to walk away" from confrontation. Women are increasingly turning to the martial arts, said Schneider. "There's a greater degree of acceptance now with women. My membership now is about 30 per cent women, whereas a few years ago it would have been about five per cent“ To help people ease into the art, Schneider offers an "orientation class" geared to the members' needs. The class "takes a person with no knowledge whatsoever and teaches them the fundamentals and gets them stretched out a little. They learn to respond to what their body is telling them." Schneider said many of his clients are children. "Parents like their kids getting into it because of the self-confidence it builds as well as respect and coordination. lt channels an aggressive child's energies into a more positive endeavor and brings out an introverted childs' sense of himself." "We teach Kung-Fu as ts" form of iitnass first. That's what it originated as -- it evolved as a martial art. " addresses the tree areas offltness: strenth, flexibility, and aerobic capacity." Though most of Schneider's customers are from Kitchener-Water. loo, he says some come from as far away as Simcoe to study. Part of thtettracti?n fould ye the style of teaching adopted by Schneider. Perhaps the greatest strength of the academy is the expertise of Schneider. He's a member of the executive committee of the Canadian Chinese kuo Shu (Martial Arts) Federation, a regulatory body for the industry. Schneider has some concerns about the "misconceptions about the art" held by some of the public. Much of the problem can be traced to “Charlatans and people who are not accredited teachers" opening academies.
