The 1900â€"seat theatre will be home to five performances of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe‘s, My Fair Lady, April 27 to April 30. This undertaking has been a year in the works since Kitchenâ€" er‘s city council moved to make the Centre more accessible for community groups. "With the move into the reâ€" gion‘s largest theatrical facility, we were challenged to produce a show that was in line with our past productions as well as one that had great marketing potenâ€" tial," Bill Klos, My Fair Lady‘s director, said. "This is the biggest musical production that any high school drama company has yet to attempt. In fact, it is twice the budget of Jâ€"M‘s 1984 run of West Side Story." The numbers agree: 11 sets, 128 cast members, 80 production peoâ€" ple and an orchestra of 40. The only professionals involved will be for set design and construction, lighting and sound and stage management. ‘"We have had a great deal of cooperation from the Centre‘s management and the unionized employees. The Centre has run workshops for our students trainâ€" ing them in the use of the sophisâ€" ticated stage and sound systems," Klos said. ‘"Some of the students are alâ€" ready quite familiar with the facility, being graduates of the Centre‘s summer School of Perâ€" forming and Visual Arts." Catâ€"like Preparations for the play have been onâ€"going since the green light was given in May 1987. Auditions and rehearsals have been in full gear since the fall and finishing touches are now being Jule, Timothy Denis as Sky Masterson and Bruce Bricknell as Miss Adelaide‘s crapâ€"shooting beau Nathan Detroit. McCord finds Mustakas wonderful in the direcâ€" tor‘s role. She admires his keen sense of timing and fineâ€"tuned coâ€"ordination. "He understands this stuff very well," she purred. Though she hasn‘t played Bomb since January, yes, McCord admits she slinks and stalks around in daily routine. It‘s fun. She handles the role of Miss Jâ€"M‘s My Fair Lady high school first at Centre in the Square Bill Klos (Continued from page B1) put into place in preparation for the run later this month. Jâ€"M Drama Productions is the combined efforts of both St. Jerâ€" ome‘s and St. Mary‘s High Schools. The company has put on such elaborate shows as Fiddler on the Roof (1973), West Side Story (1969, 1984) and Jesus Christ Superstar (1978). "This will, most likely, be the last major musical the two schools undertake prior to the opening of the new Resurrection High School," Klos said. "It is a shame to see the end of such a remarkable theatrical history." Klos has been an active memâ€" ber of the St. Jerome‘s communâ€" ity over his 28 year teaching career. In 1987, he was awarded the Bishop Reding Award recogâ€" nizing his skills as the consumâ€" mate Catholic Teacher. "One of my most cherished passions in a long teaching career is to present the young person with the opportunity to achieve in much more than the ordinary way. The young person who works at acting or dancing or singing or designing soon learns the real value of individual exâ€" pression in and with a unified whole." Klos has also been actively involved within the local drama community, acting and directing with the Kâ€"W Little Theatre and Kâ€"W Musical Productions. He has served students in many capacities â€" teacher, department head, viceâ€"principal, student acâ€" tivities director and drama proâ€" ducer and director. Rob Carli believes that if Henry Higgins were alive in 1988, things would be a great deal different for the turnâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"cenâ€" tury chauvinist. ‘"Henry would survive despite himself in today‘s world â€" but the world would no longer revolve around his ego." The 18â€"yearâ€"old, grade 12 stuâ€" dent finds it interesting playing a Susan Irwin APRIL 20, 1988 Adelaide with the elegance of a streetsmart lioness So the colorful CATS ego remains with her. _ "It‘s hard to leave Bomb. Cats are very proud and that extends to a very demanding show. That ties it altogether. You feel at the end of the show really proud of what you‘ve done. CATS is also very spiritual and ur,-cinl. These cats meet only once a vear at The Jellicle Bail for an evening that is in year at The Jellicle Ball for an evening that is in itself very special. So there are always moments on stage that I could never, ever forget." character that has been added to today‘s endangered species list. . Carli, in his first leading role, is no stranger to the performing arts. His past experiences in the music field have given him the depth needed to perform without instrument, as well. ‘"Being greatly interested in music, J have always had a tendency to be involved in the musicals. I see it as a very natural progression from ‘the pit‘ to the ‘stage‘." Actively involved in swimming and debating, Carli hopes to pursue a postâ€"secondary degree in the maths and sciences. "Perhaps someday I‘ll follow up on a career in the arts; 1 have many other interests, but nothing seems to be quite as satisfying as music and drama." "It is her depth of character and her personal independence that I am most attracted to. I am sure she would do quite well in society today."‘ These are the qualities that 18â€" yearâ€"old Susan Irwin deems to be Eliza Doolittle‘s most striking. This is the grade 12 student‘s first leading role and she has found it to be quite the challenge. "It is one experience that I will never forget. It has helped me to develop personally as well," Irâ€" win said. "Performing has been a part of my life since I was very young. Much of my interest in musical theatre stems from my involveâ€" ment with Kâ€"W Musical Producâ€" tions." Born and raised in Kitchener, Irwin has had parts in The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof and Kiss Me Kate. She has also been actively inâ€" volved in baton twirling and in 1982, placed 4th in the world championships held in Toyko. Irwin plans to pursue a degree in sciences after high school and sees herself continuing to be involved in theatre. Rob Carli MC GHOTEILGb WATERLOO 1 HR. PHOTOFINISHING Bridge St K'w PHOTO co.
