LETTERS The attitude of City Hall is 30 years out of date. All progressive Canadian cities are striving to provide more green space, not less. In the name of reason, keep institutionâ€" al parking lots out of Waterloo Park. Cilla L. Cross Waterloo, Ont. I have lived in Waterloo long enough to know that the opinions of we plebians are seldom taken into consideration by the current city council. When the City of Waterloo gets asphalt happy, they pave whatever they like wherever they like. If an insurance company, a church or an educational institution feel they must expand their parking lot, the city paves the way for them. City hall is living in the past I have lived in Wate _fFeedback To do a reverse sitâ€"up lie on your back with your arms alongside your body and palms facing down. Keeping your knees slightly bent raise your legs until your knees are tucked in and in front of your face. Your buttocks should rise from the The upper and lower abdominal musâ€" cles are not separate, though we refer to them as being so. The rectus abdominis lies vertically across the abdominal wall from the pubic bone to the cartilages of the fifth, sixth, and seventh ribs. It‘s a long muscle so therefore needs to be worked separately for maximal toning. Despite your physical efforts, if you are only doing regular sitâ€"ups or crunches, you are only working the upper abdomiâ€" nal muscles (from the belly button up). The lower abdominals are not involved and subsequently become weak and allow your belly to assert itself. Reverse sitâ€"ups, however, work the lower abdomiâ€" nals and not the upper. This may be of particular interest to those who, like countless others, feel they are being cheated. By this I mean trying everything possible to get in shape and still have to contend with a pot belly. Though there are numerous variations on this exercise alone, I feel the majority of people involved with some type of exercise program are omitting the most effective variation â€" the reverse sitâ€"up. As I mentioned last week, various abdominal movements affect the toning of the flab around and/or below our waistline â€" sitâ€"ups being the most comâ€" 23 k ‘y»«- P $s s %»~ tX P h ge a s . d P 9 e it i(,t a . : e , R L m C T Pm 4 * e M ' M s k p C S P s * Mike: [E fe * y 1 . g» # , C *A . 4 25e : « a ho s be :. Our council members were elected to control taxes, they are well paid and should be doing everything possible to keep increases to a minimum. Are they doing a good job? Do we sit back and accept this increase or do we give council members "some flak." Ms. Schnarr "has not heard a great deal of flak about taxes going up." I would like Waterloo taxpayers to know that their taxes will be increased by 21 per cent. The total tax increase (Waterloo plus Regional plus School Taxes) means we will be paying approximately $125 (per $1,000) extra in taxes, that means $250 increase for a $2,000 tax base. It‘s time for ‘some flak‘ over tax increase For a more advanced variation of the reverse sitâ€"up which also involves the upper abdominals, bring your legs up and over until your feet touch the floor behind your head. Slowly roll back to the starting position and follow through again. This requires maximal stretch of the spine and if you have a weak spine or poor flexibility of the spine, it could be dangerous. If in doubt work your abdomiâ€" nals separately. Quick repetitions can therefore be done without letting the abdominals relax in between. (For best results initially aim for repititions of 25 to 50 performed every other day. Once you achieve the 50 repetitions comfortably you can do reâ€" verse sitâ€"ups every day while trying to reduce your pot belly. Once you are satisfied return to the every other day routine to maintain muscle tone.) It is not necessary to return your feet to the fioor after each repetition. The initial lift of the legs is performed by the hip flexors rather than the abdominals. In order to concentrate solely on the abdomâ€" inals keep your legs tucked in and roll the small of your back to the floor before lifting your buttocks. If you have trouble repeating this exercise with your legs relatively straight bend your knees more. This will reduce the resistance making the exerâ€" cise easier. Gradually straighten your legs for added work. (You may use your hands to help push up if the exercise is initially too difficult.) ‘"If thé people want it, let them have it. People should have one day off." Richard Klein Waterloo Alfred Ash Waterloo, Ont. Should the city of Waterloo have unrestricted Sunday shopping? If this cat is roaming free nearly 24 hours a day, do these people have a house pet in the true sense of the word? I think not. As a Waterloo citizen living next door to an irresponsible pet owner I am getting tired of reading "cutesy" letters to the editor regarding cats. I am fed up with my neighbor‘s cat sleeping on my white car. The abundance of muddy paw prints everyday and the inevitable scratches are not humorous to me. The cat sleeps on my car, sits on my window sills and buries its excrement in my garden. Whose cat is this anyway? Some people may find it "funny" to restrain a cat, but do they realize how that cat may be infringing on someone else‘s rights? Tired of irresponsible pet owners He is not looking elsewhere but takes time to do a little research on this industry and discovers that some of the top people got their start in the same job that he is doing. What they could do, he could do. He can go just as far as he is willing to grow because all growing industries are looking for people who want to climb, for they are the ones who understand that, in order to grow themselves, they must help the company grow to make room for them. Now, let‘s take a different young man with the same job. He doesn‘t see himself as just working on a loading dock, but rather as having his foot on the bottom rung of a ladder in a large industry, offering virtually unlimited opportunity for growth. He doesn‘t make much money so he is vaguely dissatisfied. He doesn‘t think much of his job and so keeps an eye out for something better. What‘s in a job? Have you ever given this much thought? It‘s very mu:g like asking what‘s in a person? For eumrle, two women, each married to good solid husbands and with children attached, will gconduct their homes and families in two distinctly different ways. Each family and home will reflect the woman of the house and her attitude toward life. It is the same with any occupation: Do you see it as just a job or a vocation? Let‘s say that a young man gets a job working on the loading dock of some large corpoâ€" ration, loading the company‘s products for shipment. To him, it is just a job and no more â€" he will draw his paycheque and that will be all he is working for. Here are two young men, both with the ‘"No. I work at Zehr‘s and J don‘t want. to work on Sunday. I work on six days of the week already." In his day, one needed the wisdom of age to optimize the energy and resilience of youth, but today there is no excuse for wishing that one could do it all over again. all. But as long as people have no regard for their neighbor‘s property and rights I feel this is the only solution. There is nothing wrong with this if that is the way they want to live. This is a free country and they can live any way they choose. But it is a bit of a tragedy if they do so because they don‘t know there is a better way. Of course, I realize it is not the fault of the cat, but of the owner. What a shame that cats and dogs have to be legislated at MS Society says thanks It is because of all this that so many young people will find themselves, in later life, feeling somehow that they have missed the boat. By taking a short term view, they drift aimlessly in the sea of circumstances, taking life as it comes and not sacrificing present pleasures for future gains. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canaâ€" da (Ontario Division) sends its heartfelt thanks to all of you who have assisted with fundâ€"raising for the special needs of those with Multiple Sclerosis, and to the volunteers who give their time to visiting and emotional support. The world is a better place because of folks like you. Thank you. He is suffering from career myopia. He doesn‘t see the big picture because he is not thinking big enough. He has no longâ€" term goal to strive for because he does not believe he can achieve it. The pity of it is that our first young man, while taking the short term view of looking for a better paycheque, fails to realize that there is, hiding in his daily work, more opportunity than he could develop in a lifetime â€" the road to all that he, and the family he will have one day, could want. same job but with entirely . different attitudes toward it and entirely different horizons.
