PAGE B4 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY Correction Despite being one of the more eclectic bands during punk‘s heyday and actually the first British punk band to release a record, the Damned were overâ€"shadowed by more notoriâ€" ous contemporaries such as the Sex Pistols. The Light At The End of The Tunnel The Damned MCA Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special The Light At The End Of The Tunnel begs the question: why weren‘t those guys stars. This comprehensive twoâ€"record set traces the band from its seminal beginnings under the tutelage of Nick Lowe, through a plethora of personnel changes and artistic directions. Because they never settled into a cohesive unit, the Damned‘s history was rife with uncertainty and lack of focus. But they recorded many great songs in the strippedâ€"down, highâ€"speed guitar style of the punk tradition. All the classics are included here, covering a period from the groundbreakâ€" ing Damned Damned Damned in 1977 to 1985‘s Anything. Most have withstood the test of time, and the irreverence, vitality and skewed pop moments are a breath of fresh air. Honored with silver medals for their achievements were violinists Lisa Schropp (grade 6) and Stuart Hoegner (grade 7) of Waterloo, both students of Joan Wilson; violinists Cathy Wong (grade 3) of Waterloo and Kevin Semenjuk (grade 2) of Kitchener, both students of Christine Meyer; cellist Christine Moore (grade 1) of Baden, a student of Sister Valentia. manager his own fine solo albums (check, out his excellent 1986 album T Bone Burnett). Here he sheds his country threads in favour of a more fashionable pop style. With a bigâ€" name band in tow, including the ubiquitous Tony Levin, Burnett rips through his most eccentric set to date. There‘s‘ gritty nock (Monkey Dance), offâ€"beat pop (The Strange Case Of Frank Cash And The Morning Paper) and his trademark folk narratives. Some will no doubt miss the warmth of his earlier work, but modernists will embrace the spacious sound and idiosyncratic approach. Another winner from one of America‘s most important songwriters. Tonio K WHAT? Records/A&M Notes From The Lost Civilization In What Women Want, Tonio says women want money and German cars, but most of all they want love. Love is the pervasive theme, the answer to the unfulfilled promise of the ‘60s (Children‘s Crusade) and the current glut of materialism and selfâ€"indulgence (The Execuâ€" tioner‘s Song). It‘s his most introspective work and a crack lineup of guest musicians â€" T Bone Burnett, Booker T. Jones and Jim Keltner â€" provides some stellar support. A pleasant surprise. The title of Tonio K‘s fifth album probably has something to do with the hopelessness of our double income/day care generation. But whereas one of rock‘s angry men at one time would have resigned himself to the futility of the situation, he now sees some light at the end of the tunnel, even if it‘s that of a trendy Teutonic road sedan.
