Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff The Waterloo Juniors left town Monday morning as the best ringette team in Ontario. They hope to come back Sunday as the best team in Canada. The dream of a national title is on the line this week in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the 10th annual Canadian Ringette Championships. The surprising Waterloo team â€" representing Ontario â€" will be one of 11 teams vying for the Air Canada Cup. _Waterloo earned the Winnipeg trip with a hard fought 4â€"3 upset win over Kitchener in the finals of the Ontario championship last month in London. _ "It‘s hard to tell who is the favorite at this point, but we‘re certainly in the running," said coach Larry Koch prior to a team practice Friday. Waterloo versus Canada “Ovlv.lr";);)_l'yrié(v)ial at this point is to make the crossovers â€" anything can happen fr.om‘there." Teams will compete in a full roundâ€"robin tournaâ€" ment. having an opportunity to play teams from each province. The firstâ€"place team in the roundâ€"roâ€" bin will then play fourth, and second will play third. The two winners will then battle for gold with the losers going for bronze. Twentyâ€"nine teams from all ten provinces and the Northwest Territories will compete in the Junior (15 and under), Belle (17 and under), and Deb (18 and over) age davisions. Manitoba teams. which have won the Deb and Belle titles in recent vears, are consistently finalists in all age divisions, but the Ontario teams won both the Junior and Belle titles last season. Other members of the team are: Trish Missere, Laurie Reain, Bridget Freeman, Sherisse Turnbull, Jenny Riediger, Janis Reynolds, Jane Reeve, Anne Reynolds, Kim Koch, Teresa Holtham and Shannon Harrigan; daughter of Waterloo Siskins‘ coach Gerry Harrigan. Jack Reynolds is coâ€"coach and Nancy Kock is manager. Waterloo will forsake their tradition black and gold colors in favor of the red, white and blue Ontario sweaters. The name Waterloo appears on the back. Waterloo‘s premier player is smoothâ€"skating Julie Taylor, who may be the best Juniorâ€"age player in Canada. She was named the team‘s most valuable player at a banquet Sunday night. Waterloo Juniors were also selected as the best sportsmen at the Ontario championship by the other teams in the competition. Similar awards will be handed out at the national event. . "A few vears back the toughest thing to do was get out of Ontario. All you‘d have to do from there was show up at the nationals. But it‘s not like that anymore, there are a lot of tough teams," said Koch. The team finished in third place in their fourâ€"team league, but bounced back and surprised all comers at the provincial level. They also finished third at a tournament earlier this year in Beaconsfield, Quebec _ But the real story to surface from the banquet was not Taylor‘s award, but the award that goes to the most improved player on the season. o @Fully Insured *»Satisfaction Guaranteed FREE ESTIMATES 742â€"6652 $ 1 09 Men‘s _ leens Boys 4 . 6x lc ce es ocm c o SA =" 2s S$OCKS SHORTS SHIRTS 49° a.49 | 1.99 | 4.:97 ces mc D Ccms , ‘ Ladies â€" Teens Men‘s â€" Teens Girls 4 â€" 14 Bo,s e COTTON DAN!
