PAGE 26 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY APRIL 13, 1988 Chronicle Special Talking Heads The element of surprise in pop music is virtually nonâ€"existent, but Talking Heads use it judiciously and with .frelt success. As such, a new ‘Talking Heads album is a considerable event and Naked is no exception. It‘s an artistic tour de force, cementing Byrne‘s position as songwriter extraordinaire and offering further proof that this band stands alone when it comes to integrating cosmopoliâ€" tan musical styles. Each track is a brilliant pop novella, chock full of instrumental twists, exotic rhythms and infectious, typically skewed melodies. An innovative, complex work, Naked is a must for anyone wondering what pop music of the future will sound like. The Pogues have been called a drunken version of the Clancy Brothers for the soâ€"called irreparable damage they‘ve done to the music of their homeland. But these Irish rabbleâ€"rousâ€" ers capture the personality of their homeland, the vibrancy, beauty, confusion and aggression often missing in the music of more fervent traditionalists. Like its predecessors, If I Sould Fall . . . takes the Irish tradition and Twists it into odd musical shapes. Banjos and guitars are at home with strings and horns, allowing for an odd blend of jigs and reels, punkâ€"folk, and concocâ€" If I Should Fall From Grace with God Island /g/ T7z !/ ;;’," o | tions that toss everything into the mixer. Whether taking a devilâ€"mayâ€"care approa applying tender loving care, the Pogues‘ irâ€" nmm.chumnndn&undhntvi‘otmnhlfl Should Fall From Grace With God a rewarding lan Matthews Windham Hill/A&M On paper, this looks like an odd collaboration. Windham Hill, the label known primarily for its newâ€"age philosophy, has brought together Matthews, a veteran British folkie and Ameriâ€" can Jules Shear, a brilliant songwriter whose clever pop has gone virtually unnoticed in his own country. Matthews would seem like an unlikely candidate to do justice to shear‘s material. An erstwhile member of Fairport Convention, Matthews enjoyed moderate success in the early ‘70s with a series of lightweight folkâ€"rock albums. The revelation is Walking A Changing Line succeeds beyond all expectation. Matthews‘ sweet tenor reveals a resonance missing in his earlier work and it‘s the heartbeat of Shear‘s compelling material. The minimal accompaniâ€" ment of eloquent acoustic guitars and subtle electronic shadings leaves lots of room for Matthews and his voice proves to be an unwavering instrument. An imaginative, beautiful work, this unusual experiment should do wonders for both parties.
