=;-:.'i t EWl siology professor has concerns about the havoc some joggers are wreaking on their lower limbs. Dr. David Winter, an engineer and phyaiolofin whose research interests include biomechanics, has been studying jogging and trying to determine the sorts of injuries joggers are apt to suffer due to the stresses involved ... ankle, knee, shin, Achilles‘ tenâ€" don, and other leg and hip injuâ€" mes "Obviously, in order to run we have to generate forces," says Winter. "Runners both generate and absorb energy, and thus we have compressions of the bone, bending of bone, sheer stresses, and so on. It is hard to measure these things â€" you can‘t insert an instrument into the bone to reâ€" cord them. We have to estimate them." ~ Winter does some highly sophisâ€" ticated _ estimating _ however, based on data collected in his wellâ€"equipped "gait" lab on the UW campus. He has been looking at the mechanics of running in terms of forces on the feet, ankles and knees, and also in terms of movement â€" kinematics, â€" energy generation and energy absorpâ€" tion. He uses engineering technoloâ€" gy, termed "link segment analâ€" yses," to mathematically model the body and the forces in the tendons and across the joints â€" particularly at the knees and ankles â€" from the moment of contact when the heel comes down to the ground to the moâ€" ment of pushâ€"off, when the jogger takes a new stride forward. Most jogging injuries, he notes, involve the knee or ankle. "We can show, mathematically, that each time the foot comes down on the pavement and each time it pushes off again, tremendous forces are generated ... up to 11 times the jogger‘s body weight. In other words, it is just as though the jogger was bearing the weight of 10 additional people, momenâ€" tarily."
