Tomas, Czechland‘s most promising brain surgeon has a passion for surgery and a passion for women He skilfully uses his scaipel of lust to cut these women. He has an insatiable desire to find deep inside them what he lacks in himself. It is, he admits "the unbearable lightness of being." It is like an outline. we cannot fill it. correct it, or make it any better. It‘s frightening." Such is the diagnosis of Doctor Tomas (pronounced Tomache). He does live in a frightening world. For this is Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1968, the eve of the Russian invasion. Danie!l Day Lewis (My Beautiful Laundrette, Room With a View ) is superb as Tomas. As a Beatle clone band plays rock at a local dance, a table of Russian bureaucrats forces the Czech mop tops to play "Internationale". When the band rocks up this anthem, and the disgusted Russian representatives walk out, it is clearly understood this action is a minute premonition of the strife to come. Though Lightness is sexually exotic, screenwâ€" rights Kaufman, Jeanâ€"Claude Carrere, have cast this sublime lover‘s triad through an intelligent, eloquent light of emotion in the shadow of oppresâ€" sion. Tomas and Tereza change. He trades in his scaipel for the sharp nib of a political pen, writing of the Czech Stalinists while comparing them to Oedipâ€" uses. Tereza finds her true vocation as a political press photographer, risking prison to smuggle this crucial evidence to Amsterdam. These Russian atrocities were the only ones photographically documented. Czech cameramen and women braved death to preserve the inhuman face of violence for the not so distant future. Lightness is blinding in its historical reality. Director Kaufman melds Tomas and Tereza into real street riot "tanks and protest" Czech footage with a chilling visual effect. Lightâ€" ness is almost two movies. But in the second half darkness looms. Yet Kaufman has taken pains to make Kundera‘s sometimes wooden book characters come to life, noteably Sabina‘s Swiss lover Franz (Derek de Lint), and bawdy farmer Pavel (Pavel Landobsky) and his beerâ€"drinking pig pal Mephisto. Here is the quaint charm of the Old Country as Tomas and Tereza find a brief peace of political mind in the bosom of homeland. World class director of photography Sven Nykust (also Ingmar Bergman regular) paints the magic of Prague and Geneva through an artist‘s eve in a cascade of special effects. Nykist, and director Kaufman especially reveal the raw beauty of Czechoslavakia to visually enchance a dazzling cinematic panorama of modern history and intellectual eroticism iBX P retiee ‘|'5\‘53i\=3:\:l:l!/'/;-;;§ i xyâ€"â€"â€" _ HATASHIT open tha EO BROADWAY STREET _ 51 ARTHUR ST.
