As part of its continuing Japa nese Cinema series, the Princess Cinema ran Shohei Imamura‘s Gripping Japanese series at the Princess 1961 black comedy Pigs and Battleships Monday. The series, which featured The Makioka Sisters last week, runs through the month of March. Set in the city of Yokosuka, a port town which is home to the largest U.S. naval base in the area, Pigs and Battleships telis the comingâ€"ofâ€"age tale of a teeâ€" naged boy name Kinta (Hiroyuk: Nagato), and his girl Haruko (Jitsuko Yoshimura), against the background of the post World War Il "Westernization" of Jaâ€" _ The story is no piece of Japaâ€" nese Disney. Kinta, like everyone else, is blinded by a fast buck and dreams of Americanâ€"like success. He tells his girl Haruko, "when I get married I‘ll buy a good suit and be a rock band manager." Haruko, in fact, is one of the few people who can see what‘s hapâ€" pening. She continues to fight, after an abortion and an attack by three Gls, to get away from Yokosuka for good. She even manages to convince Kinta that use of sound as well as independent Optician Thomas J. D‘Arcy In the closing scene of the film, while crowds of girls in Western dress cheer the arrival of another this is the best thing to do, but he is struck down by his desire for one more chance at his "bonus," and in another moment of irony we see his corpse thrown into a truck full of the dead pigs which were to earn him his fortune.
