LETTERS The aim is to achieve fairness Further to the open letter published Feb. 10 from John M. Mach, I wish to respond to his concerns regarding tax reform The aim of the Minister of Finance, through Tax Reform proposals, is to achieve fairness in the tax system. For many years, individual Canadians have expressed the view that compames, and financial institutions in particular, have not contributed their fair share to tax. The proposed investment tax on life insurance companies is part of a major thrust to correct this. The Superintendent of Insurance has assured the chairman of the Finance Committee of the House of Commons that Last week 1 packed the family into the car and headed south for sunshine and relaxation. We‘ve travelled for long distances in the car, with two giggling girls, several times before and we know that unless we watch our eating and activity level, our tension and stress will get the better of us. With March break coming next week there‘ll be a lot of families vacationing. If your family is like most and you plan your holiday well ahead of time, take the extra time and think about some activiâ€" ties for the motel/hotel rooms while away. If your family is like ours and plans its vacations about a day ahead of time, you may not be thinking about fitmess. We did. We packed our rubber bands thinking we‘d do a few exercises after a lnng da;' of driving. We didn‘t. We did, however, walk for considerable lengths of time, as well as swim. The activity must have been enough foxj us because we fell into bed each night exhausted, and came home feeling good. Holiday fitness does not have to mean sticking to a strict regiment of exercises each day, unless of course you know you are planning to eat far more than you normally eat. If you do not have an active family the headaches, constipaâ€" tion, and aching stomachs as a result of inactivity and overeating/oversnacking can ruin a wellâ€"deserved and costly holiday. There are many activities you and your family can participate in â€" from squeezing your buttocks if sitting too _fFeedback "I can‘t see walking a cat on a leash, they‘re not the type of animal that would respond to training. Walk â€" Whether sightseeing, going to easier by cab or car, but much nicer if you walk. You‘ll see more and feel better. Remember to take good walking shoes with you. Stairs â€" Rather than take the elevator to your room take the stairs. If you are more than three floors up you can try walking the first few floors and then using the elevator. Swim â€" Use the pool even if you can‘t swim. Hang out in the shallow end under the watchful eye of family or lifeguard and do leg lifts, arm sweeps or jogging across the pool. If you can swim then do it. First thing in the morning and you‘ll avoid the boisterous children. Jog â€" Pack a pair of running shoes and hit the beach. Early morning or dusk to avoid the heat and glare off the water and sand. The earlier you are, the better chance of finding those beautiful shells. Calesthenics â€" Try a few sitâ€"ups or cur|}â€"ups before going to bed each night. Every time you grab something to eat from the refrigerator do some pushâ€"ups against the kitchen counter. insurance companies have sufficient asâ€" sets to deal with a realistic tax on their profits without affecting their policyholâ€" ders. The Finance Committee has held discussions with the Minister of Finance, his officials, and the life insurance indusâ€" try to ensure that both financial instituâ€" tions and policyholders are treated fairly. On March 2, 1988. the Minister of Finance announced further details and technical adjustments to the proposed investment income tax, as a result of these consultations. The revised structure of the tax has been accepted by the boards of the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association and the Life Underwriters Association of Canada. Stretch â€" Whether it be in the pool, on the beach, in the car or in bed, stretching regularly will ease tension if sitting for long periods of time and will help prevent sore muscles if you are more active than normal. I have made vigorous representations to the Minister of Finance, and am pleased that the outcome was mutually acceptâ€" able. Have a good holiday‘ T . Reasoning for abortion is unfounded It is time that Canadians with voices cry out for Canadians without voices, to Stop Abortions! â€" We know that the reasoning for aborâ€" tion is false. In the U.S.A. and other nations where abortion is on demand they still have "unwanted children‘", battered and bruised, they still have criminals too numerous to put in prisons, murder is rampant, suicide is increasing. The respect for and value of human life is diminishing. Abortion is just one more example of the growing disrespect for human life; abortion is not a final solution to end the devaluing of children, it is not a cure for the unwantedness of people. _The only way to get rid of "unwanted children", unwanted people, is to start growing? It‘s all up to you. Here‘s some advice from an expert on the subject, Howard Whitman: A middleâ€"aged woman,. who was all upset about the years piling up, said to a much older woman who didn‘t seem to mind her age at all: "I wish I could grow old as gracefully as you." "My dear," the second woman replied, "you don‘t grow old. When you cease to grow, you are old." If you are middleâ€"aged, don‘t fall into the trap of thinking you are all grown up. If you are really alive, you‘ll never stop growing as long as you have breath. Growth is the elemental quality of life. And it is the continual, burgeoning growth within us, the changing from day to day, that makes life exciting and rewarding. And, like everything else in nature, there is no static state; if it‘s not growing, it‘s decaying. People who keep on growâ€" ing never feel old. They simply feel alive. These are the people who are too busy to celebrate birthdays, and who have to stop and think, when asked how old they are. They are people who are activityâ€"conâ€" scious insteadâ€"of being timeâ€"conscious. A legislative committee on the probâ€" * A tendency to live in the past, instead of for the future. * Failure to learn something new. Do you find yourself thinking more about other people and less about yourself? Have you changed your ideas on at least one major subject lately? Do you feel able to cope with future changes in your activities or way of living? Are you quite keen and actively concerned about the dayâ€"toâ€"day affairs of the world? Have you opened up any new field of knowledge lately, or started to pursue a new interest? Are you vitally interested in young people and keeping up with what is new in their world? Do you find yourself bect;ming more kind to the people close to you? If you answered yes to every question, you are an amazingly young person regardless of the years that have come and gone since your arrival here. If you had a couple of no‘s, you‘re all right, but too many and you are beginning to decay in the most important departments of any age. Are you growing wiser and better with the passing years? Or are you just as ignorant as you were 10 years ago? The wise ones grow, those not so wise just get old. If you want an antidote to aging, I think St. Edmund said it all many centuries ago: "Work as if you were to live forever. And live as if you were to die tomorrow." (Mr. Fellows operates the Human Reâ€" source Development Institute, P.O. Box 642, Cambridge, NR 5W1, providing effectiveness training to business and industry.) _ Remember the parable of the Judge and justice (Luke chapter 18). o wanting them, To Love Them It is important to write, call, tell the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leaders, the Minister of Justice, and every Memâ€" ber of Parliament to write a law to ensure that the Freedom to Live is the Primary Freedom of all Canadians from concepâ€" tion, a freedom upon which all other freedoms and rights depend. But it is even more important to call on God. Wisdom is the ultimate prize of age â€" "I think it‘s great. I like cats but I like birds more. They catch the baby birds in our backyard."
