Hard hats on as Lutheran Life groundâ€"breaking goes Thursday Construction hard hats will be standard issue Thursday when directors and Head Office staff of Lutheran Life Insurance Society of Canada get together at the offical ground breaking for their new Head Office building in Waterloo. Planned for completion in spring, 1989, the 60,000 squareâ€"foot building (nearly 6,000 square metres) will be located on 8.8 acres (3.6 hectares) of Societyâ€"owned land on Weber St. North, adjacent to property at the rear of the Waterloo Inn. Lutheran Life‘s head office operations will occupy the top floor of the twoâ€"storey building. The remaining space (more than 25,000 square feet â€" 2,300 square metres) will be available for rental. The fraternal Society‘s new home will have a brick and reflective glass exterior and a large central galeria or atrium which will bring natural light to all levels of the interior. This unique feature means no one working in the building will be more than 25 feet (7.6 metres) from a source of natural light. Exterior landscaping will complement the classical style of the building. The $6 million project is being designed by Horton & Ball, Walter, Fedy, McCargar, Hachborn, a local architectural and engineering firm. Thursday‘s onâ€"site ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Society‘s 15th annual meeting. In addition to directors and staff, guests will include representatives of Canada‘s Lutheran churches, the City of Waterloo and Lutheran Life‘s sales force. One of Canada‘s largest fraternal insurance societies, Lutheran Life is a memberâ€"owned, memberâ€"directed organization. It was founded to serve Canadian Lutherans and their families with insurance protecâ€" tion, and to assist its members and the Lutheran community through fraternal benefits such as grants and scholarships. Based in the Marsland Centre in downtown Waterloo since its founding in 1972, the Society is one of several major insurance organizations headquartered in Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo. Lutheran Life operates in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Life insurance in force protecting its nearly 30,000 members exceeds $504 million. Society assets total more than $136 million.
