Resting upon the stone mantel!â€" piece, tucked in behind four mediâ€" umâ€"sized trophies, is a note tied to three heliumâ€"filled aluminum balloons which reads: Congratuâ€" lations to the top Canadian male modelâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"year, Love Mom. The trophies and note belong to Steve McBoyle, a January graduâ€" ate of Bluevale collegiate. Since midâ€"February when McBoyle was proclaimed the nation‘s top male model by the Modelling Associaâ€" tion of Canada during its threeâ€" day convention in Toronto, McBoyle has found his world taking on a whole new light PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY MARCH 2, 1988 Isobel Lawson Chronicle Staff Competing in the 5°10" and higher, and 17 to 25 age group, McBoyle won first in the bathing suit contest, runway contest, and first runnerâ€"up in photography He admits he was a surprise winner, with only one photograph shoot under his belt and little experience on the modelling With a Grade 13 school average of 86 per cent, McBoyle is still holding fast to plans to enter preâ€" med at the University of Toronto this fall, but until then the 61" 19â€"yearâ€"old will be spending eight months hustling about Europe. And he‘s excited about the opporâ€" tunity of a lifetime. "I went into it as a joke with one photo shoot behind me. It was a surprise to all of us," â€"except his mother, he says. McBoyle was crowned the title in February at the threeâ€"day Modelling Association of Canada convention in Toronto. Model Steve isobel Lawson photos She concedes the life of a model is not easy, and the glamorous night life that one might expect is not practical for a model who has to remain in peak physical form. This is not to mention the more harsh realities of alcohol, drugs and the fastâ€"paced and moneyâ€" oriented society. As the mother company holding his contract, she says, like other models, his secuâ€" rity and wellâ€"being are closely watched. While some models try for years to grace the pages of European agents‘ listings, McBoyle stepped in as a virtual outsider and swept the show. In the process two agents; Klage‘s in Germany and Time in Switzerland, want him on their rosters. He leaves for Milan, Italy in early April where he will begin his European mod:â€" elling career with a twoâ€"month photography shoot "I‘m very optimistic. He‘s got a good attitude, enthusiasm and he‘s got a look they want," said Heaton. "He‘s got his foot in the door now it‘s up to him." The agents had told him go to bed early at night and look after himself because you can‘t be on a photo shoot after a party," said Heaton ‘"Steve is very clean living now lan Kirkby photo T. A strain has been put on some of the old friendships which has left McBoyle wondering who his friends really are. It‘s a paradox, he explains. People ask him how his modelling is going and "if you say too much people think you‘re conceited," he adds, ‘"They ask you a question but they don‘t want to hear the answer." He‘s stopped drinking alcohol in order to gain control of his complexion; he‘s on a strictly maintained diet, works out in the gym for at least one hour every day, and he‘s in bed by 11 p.m. every night. He admits he‘s changed in some ways, likening that change to when a friend quits school to work in a factory. After a time the friend seems older and more distant. He feels that change has occurred within him. ‘‘There‘s a lot of people that see (modelling) as a lot of fun. It‘s the same thought I had, standing in front of the photographer and smiling and going to parties at night but it‘s not true. You go home to sleep," he says. For now, McBoyle is concentratâ€" ing on his pending career, glossâ€" ing covers of European fashion magazines. In the scheme of things the irony stands out that European agents come to Canada and select the top model for his virile, smileless, European goodâ€" looks. ‘"It‘s just a look I‘m suppose to have. They might not want it next year," McBoyle says. Modelling, he adds, is more than looks. Agents take i tion personality as long hours under t stressful conditions Although anxious to get the show on the road, considering top male models garner up to $2,000 a day, McBoyle remains realistic if not a bit cautious about what he‘s heading into. ‘"Everyone says it‘s glamorous, I don‘t think it‘s glamorous; it‘‘s a lot of hard work." And for his parents, who are worried he won‘t continue with his education, he adds, ‘"for someone with brains and likes to learn things I think I‘l] get sick of it."
