CONESTOGA CARPET c n PET _ «â€"_CARBPEL _: This film is the life story of the last Emperor of China. It interleaves early and late scenes in the Emperor‘s life, reaching back to his 1908 crowning at age three, through his 10 year imprisonment as a political undesirable in the 1950‘s, and forward to his eventual death as a simple gardener in 1967. It is the story of a man who, despite his absolute power, had little control of his life. He was told who to marry, what to say, where to go. His world eventually extended no farther than the Forbidden City that housed his palace and entourâ€" age. Carefully protected from China‘s conversion to a republic, the child Emperor found himself emperâ€" or of but a few thousand servants. His servants burned down the Imperial storeroom, to hide their corruption, and many were expelled from the City. The Forbidden City is a theatre without an audience. Why did the actors remain on stage? To steal the scenery piece by piece. He embraced Western culture, taking on a British tutor; and vowed reform, even within his small world. The republic soon expelled him from his small emperordom and, after exile, he eventually was ‘"reformed" in a chinese prison before being returned to his society as a gardener. The amount of devotion and loyalty shown to the Emperor by his entourage, even as a small ghil_d, is amazing. He is permitted every childish fantasy, but is not permitted to be or play as a child. His brother talks of what it is like to have playmates. To "prove" he is the Emperor to his brother, he makes a servant drink green ink. The costumes, scenery, and traditions surroundâ€" ing this man are incredible, especially as seen by unfamiliar Western eyes. One comes away from this film with a strong impression of the range of experience felt by a man who was both Emperor of China and prison toilet cleaner. The cinematography is a delight to see. So much of what makes China different from the West is visual â€" the attention to detail in costume, hair, and appearance. The contrast is not merely between the Chinese and the nonâ€"Chinese in this film; we see the strong contrast between this man as Emperor of China and as tennis player in white shorts and tennis shirt. The last Emperor of China straddled two cultures and two methods of government. This film is worth seeing. The film is magnificent.
