Marg Zavaros Chronicle Special Do you live in a house of architectural or historical significance? If you do, you have probably become aware of history in a way you had not thought possible. Numerous books are being published lauding the architectural efforts of our ancestors in the wild and untamed Canada of the 1800â€"1900‘s. ‘"The Settler‘s Dream" is the recently pubâ€" lished glossy 454â€"page commemorative volume by Prince Edward County to mark the 200th anniversary of the first landing of its Loyalistgy settlers. Written and compiled by Peter John Stokes, a consulting restoration architect, perhaps best known for his work at Niagaraâ€" onâ€"theâ€"Lake and hiswarious publications. He has been in this area to evaluate and recomâ€" mend future uses of the Homer Watson House in Doon. Cruickshank assisted in compiling information for the book as well as taking photographs of present structures. John de Visser‘s color photography adds to the nNumerous black and white photos from archives and private collections. Not all gloss and glitz, there is invaluable information pertaining to the history of Prince Edward County, its architecture and settlers. Log cabins, barns and outer buildings, homes, businesses and churches comprise this survey taken from the beginning of Loyalist settleâ€" ment around 1800 until the end of the 19th century. A wide swath of architectural styles is represented: Hillside 1835 shows a then and i0 12 MARCH & 16719 MARCH 1988 °8 PM e THEATRE OF THE ARTS e UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO The World of Books now photo with lattice work and a twoâ€"storey trellis verandah. The West Lake Boarding School built of brick in the "Loyalist" style was a Quaker Girls‘ boarding school from 1814â€" 1869. It is now privately owned and may be seen from Highway 33 in Prince Edward County. The 1800 storeyâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half stone house in the village.of Wellington is believed to be the oldest house in the County still standing. The Octagonalâ€"shaped house never ceases to fascinate. A shortâ€"lived architectural fad, this eightâ€"sided home can be seen on Main Street in Picton. An extensive pictorial glossary of styles and types of chimneys, roofs, windows, doors and decorative mouldings is given along with architectural terms to aid the novice or seaâ€" soned architecture buff. Now, after many of the aesthetically pleasâ€" ing, architecturally prominent buildings have been destroyed, we continue to drag our heels to take the necessary steps to save and preserve our heritage. It‘s refreshing to note the eviâ€" dence of a heightened awareness and appreciaâ€" tion of past architecture being revived in many newly constructed buildings. "Born again" architects and builders are zealously reproducâ€" ing Gothic windows and doors, ornate porches, cedarâ€"shake roofs and log cabins. Peter Stokes will be in town to take part in a workshop offered by UW‘s Heritage Resources Centre. It will take place on March 3 and 4 in Siegfried Hall at St. Jerome‘s College. The Settler‘s Dream.
