PAGE 16 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY MARCH 2, 1988 C UC, s Cent y ow ass mm ay®*"" _ Santee, South Carolina: It‘s that time of the year again when curlers start to put away their brooms and shine up their golf clubs. If you want to get a jump on the golf season, Director Carroll Pifer of the Santee Cooper Country Golf Association tells me this is the ideal time to come to the Santee area which is on interâ€"state highway 95 just south of Florence and Myrtle Beach. If you contact Pifer, he will arrange a golf "package deal" for you with one of the National Chains: Best Western, Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Ramada Inn, Quality Court, Interstate Inn along with four great golf courses: Lake Marion, Calhoun Country Club, 8 PW & oya 11 ue ie mds \ ofbnobilt ~Auatiina dn oib acae ts Pinelands Plantation, and Sigfield. Carroll says the daytime temperature in March is between 60 and 70°F degrees. This is ideal for golfing. Depending on the above hotel rates, the price runs between $39 to $52 U.S. per person. This includes ' C . : . Santee, S.C. 29142. Tickets available at the Humanitres The When it comes to golfing in the early spring or late autumn, there is no doubt about it but that South Carolina is the place. If you take three quarters out of your pocket and place them on Myrtle Beach, Florence and Santee on a road map you will find that the three coins will touch each other in a triangular fashion. Because of the ocean and the lovely beach, Myrtle has the more expensive golf packages averagâ€" ing around $55 per day. Santee is next with $45 per day. Florence is the cheapest at $39 and this includes an electric golf cart. Myrtle Beach has a golf package coordinator who can be reached toll free 1â€"800â€"845â€"4653 or write P.O. Box 1323 B, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29578. In the same way, Martha Dusenbury is the golf coordinator at "Swamp Fox Country" in Florence. She too can be reached at 1â€"803â€"669â€"2900 or via P.O. Box 3806, Florence, S.C. 29502. With the exception of Christchurch, New Zealand, and perhaps Palm Springs, California, I never have seen such a concentration of excellent golf courses as I have in the "triangle" area off highway 95. There must be a hundred good courses and most are in a radius of ten miles from your hotel depending on whether you are staying at Santee, Florence, or Myrtle Beach. Now all these package deals have a good reduction for the "golf widow". They don‘t play golf and their husbands are renting a hotel room anyway. Hence the Brigantine Inn at Myrtle Beach lists daily golf, lodging, and breakfast starting March 5 at $55 but the nonâ€"golfing wife gets in for $29 per day. Now there are plenty of things to do while their husbands are playing golf{. For instance, about 10 miles out of Myrtle Beach towards Florence and Santee is the Waccamaw Shopping Mall. This Mall reminds me of a half dozen airport hangars with "factory outlet" signs on each. My wife got lost in one of them. There are lots of historical things to see as this is where General Cornwallis chased the elusive "Swamp Fox" patriot General in 1780. Janet Panabaker Chronicle Special! Excitement is mounting as the final preparations are made for UW Drama‘s production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, slated to run at UW‘s Theatre of the Arts March 10 to 12, and March 16 to 19. Rehearsals for the hit Stephen Sondheim musical began in January, although most of the students and other UW members involved had work underway long before then. This is the Drama Department‘s third overall, and second major production for the 19871988 season Director Maarten van Dijk, a member of UW‘s Drama Faculty, is enthusiastic about the upcoming show. The play, he says, is "incredibly funny," with "absolutely delicious" wit in both songs and dialogue In preparation for this spectacle of "Roman Comedy meets the Marx Brothers," his students have studied many of the aspects of comic technique. The cast, including leads and chorus, numbers A Funny Thing Happened to be ‘absolutely delicious‘ of the all the action, Pseudolus (Steve Kuleshnyk) is surt m UW Drama Department‘s A Funny Thing Happened on 11 a m to 5 30 p m . Saturday 1 p m to $ 00 p m 24. Players were chosen from an open audition, and this production is remarkable, says cast member and publicist Susan Hadfield, since it marks the first in some time in which such a large cast has been made up entirely of students Musical direction will be provided by UW music student Ian MacBeath, who will conduct a stage orchestra comprising members of the larger UW orchestra. Although most cast members have little musical background, they are confident that Sondheim‘s popular songs, including ‘"Comedy Tonight," "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid." "Lovely," and "Impossible," will be well presented. The plot for this musical has been taken in bits and pieces from the comedies of Plautus, a third century B.C. Roman playwright. Three complicated but hilarious storylines are involved, and these combine and intertwine until ‘"pandemonium" reigns. o â€" At the heart of all the action is Pseudolus, the ‘"naughty slave," who will be played in this production by Steve Kuleshnyk.
