Defined as a central nervous system dysfunction, learning disâ€" abilities hamper the brain‘s abiliâ€" ty to process information in five major areas: vision, auditory, motor, organizational and concepâ€" tual. These lead to possible diffiâ€" culties with attention, memory, reasoning, coâ€"ordination, commuâ€" nication, calculation, emotional maturity, reading, writing and spelling. Learning disabilities are not the result of mental retardaâ€" tion, physical or emotional probâ€" lems or behavioral disorders. And they can‘t be cured. Learning disabilities were recâ€" ognized by the school system in the late 1960s but little attention was paid to emotional and social development.
