This was due to the numerous accredited halls, cultural and general events, the Beauty Pagâ€" eant and the Oktoberfest Parade which was seen in person by 300,000 residents and visitors and watched on television by an At his recent address to the annual â€" Oktoberfest â€" Meeting, president Guenter Jessat stated that attendance figures for the festival‘s 20th year were at an allâ€"time high. Running a store and a household at the same time is no easy task. But Mary Radmore has done so successfully â€" so much in fact, the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo chapter of Parents Without Partners has named her "Outâ€" standing Single Parnet of the Year." A divorced mother of two, Radmore is the proprieter of Mom‘s Little Darlings, a secondâ€"hand clothing store in the Erb Centre plaza. She joined Parents Without Partners two years ago and said ‘"it was the best thing I ever did. It‘s a great group." Shelley Frangos, viceâ€"president for Family and Youth for the Kâ€"W chapter and the Grand Valley Region said the award was given to someone who had "made a special effort to get their life on track" and had made her children‘s welfare a very important part of that. Parents Without Partners is a support group to "help children feel loved and accepted as people with the same prospects as those with two parents". Frangos stressed that it was not a single group. Outstanding parents are judged on their communâ€" ity involvement, religious and spiritual growth, Parents Without Partners affiliation and personal growth, she said. Parents must be widowed, single, divorced or legally separated to join; members don‘t have to be custodial parents. The group has "the greatest family activities", Radmore explained, like barbecues, trips, baseball games and dances. When her children, Monaâ€"Anne, 14, and Robert, 12, met with children of single parents they began to realize that it was "okay". Other parents tell you what they did and how they coped with difficulties, she continued. "The kids feel good now, and better about themselves." Her children were "quite impressed" with the awards, she said. And smiled, "It was cute." Radmore had become a single mother five years ago and said, "without my family (coping) would have been impossible." "I had been out of the work force for 14 years. I was one of those mothers who stayed at home with the kids." Help is available for single parents, she stressed, but you have to ask for it.
