The $1.3 million project‘s main purpose is to help Pakistan in managing the water that is needed in the country by some 81 million people, and comes mainly from the Himalayas, which often provide either far too much waâ€" ter, or far too little. Dr. Kenneth Hewitt, professor of geography at Wilfrid Laurier University, has been named the university‘s first University Reâ€" search Professor, and will be free from all teaching and most faculâ€" ty duties for a year, beginning July 1. During that time, he will comâ€" plete the writing of a final report on the snow and iceâ€"hydrology project that has been under way in Pakistan for more than three years, and will involve him in another visit to the site among the towering Himalayas. Hewitt, who has been a faculty member at Laurier since 1976, received his master‘s degree from Cambridge and his doctorate from the University of London. The appointment comes at an excellent time for Hewitt, since it will allow him to concentrate his efforts on the three research projects, and make him more available for the implementation of a new honors degree in physiâ€" cal geography the following year. Dr. Russell Muncaster, academâ€" ic viceâ€"president, said he made the appointment from among the applications he received from some of the top researchers at Laurier. A third research project, underâ€" taken at the request of the Canaâ€" dian Association of Geographers, will see Hewitt undertake an examination of various hazards in Canada, including earthâ€" quakes, floods and tornadoes, and manâ€"made hazards such as indusâ€" trial pollution and other threats to the health of Canadians. There will be an archaeological field trip to the Near East, and German literature and geography courses offered in Germany. There is still room for more participants in the courses offered in both locations. Participants would be expected to undertake some backâ€" ground reading and preâ€"trip orientation or seminars, and must be registered with the university. The trip to Germany leaves June 6 and returns June 27 after students have visited Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Trier, Munich, Berlin and Marburg. Dr. Alfred Hecht, a Laurier geographer, will teach two halfâ€"credit coursés. The first will focus on the German city, comparing the healthiness of various large centres and smaller cities. The second, on Western Europe, will focus on the West German landscape, with an emphasis on underâ€" standing regional variations and their relations to the broader European Common Market, of which they are a part. Egypt and Turkey will be the sites for the archaeology session, July 1 to Aug. 4. The instructor will be Dr. Robert Fisher, a Laurier religion and culture professor, conducting his 10th Near Eastern field seminar. Dr. Herminio Schmidt, also a Laurier faculty member, will teach a course on German languages and civilization, lecturing in English. The course will look at major cultural trends and movements from prehistoric times to the present. Students will do their study in an approved area of their choice.
