lure Brno" Chronicle' Staff Mike Gingerich took a deep breath and skated towards the photographer. Building speed with every pump of his powerful legs, the Waterloo Siskins' de- fenceman was nearing the point on the ice where the cameraman had asked him to stop and send snow flying through the air. Upon reaching the spot, Ginger- ich turned his skates and came to a sudden but ungraceful halt. A group of teammates and a startled photographer couldn't help but chuckle as the tough but amiable Gingerich struggled to keep himself from falling flat on his... He didn't fall this time but the damage was done. His teammates were doubled over in near hyster- ics. The photographer, mean- while, was wishing he had color mm in the camera to capture the sudden redness in Gingerich’s cheeks and the accompanying ear-to-ear grin. Needless to say. Gingerich. 20, is not a Siskin because of his skating ability. “I'm certainly not a rmesse player," he said in an interview. "I guess I'm out there to be a tough guy - not a goon mind you - but just a guy that plays the game hard. Siskins' coach Gerry Harrigan moved the valuable veteran back to the blueline this year to add a little toughness in front of the net, and according to the coach, the move has paid off with huge dividends. "Because I'm one of the older guys on the team, I've taken it upon myself to look after the younger players." "Mike has played very well for us back there and seems to be getting better as the season goes on. He's a hardmosed hockey player that's going to give you everything he's got most nights." said Harrigan, noting Gingerich's "foot speed" was another reason for taking him of the wing. On Gingerich’s toughness Har- rigan said, "It takes a bit to get him riled up but when he does, watch out. "He's a popular player - the other guys really look up to, himf' "I haven't scored as much as I wanted this year, but I'm starting to get a better feel for the posi- tion," said Gingerich. who en- joyed great success this past Bummer with the Kitchener Braves. a team which went on to win the all-Canadian Junior B lacrosse title. Quiet in the dressing room, he's known for his encouragement of the team's younger players and his easy-going nature. And - oh yes -e his fluent skating and ability to make others laugh.
