It‘s not the kind of notoriety one strives for And we are rather fond of the place. The building (Kingsway Apts.) is 120 years old. Despite its age and appearance. the building is cleaner than most 4« its age. and there is no sign of cockroaches or vermin in the 10 years that I‘ve lived here, there have been no disturbances (no police calls. no fires, no burglaries. etc.) "One in two Canadians die from heart disease and stroke â€" more than all other diseases combined." As stated by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the reasoning behind a nationally desigâ€" nated Heart month â€" February â€" is blatant. Sixty thousand Canadians die each year from a heartâ€"related iliness â€" 60 per cent outside of hospital care and nearly all preventable. The best hopes of preventing or alleâ€" viating heart and blood vessel diseases comes from a positive lifestyle change.. DIET â€" eat less meat, remove visible fat, choose lean meat, grill rather than â€" eat maximum of one egg per day â€" eat more poultry and fish (guess what? Cod liver oil is in vogue.) â€" use polyunsaturated oils for cooking, ie.. corn soya bean, sunflower. Avoid hard margarines, lard * â€" eat more fruits and vegetables WEIGHT â€" Overweight people run a higher risk because they are less likely to exercise and more likely to have a badly balanced diet. It is more important to cut down on fats than to worry about your actual weight SMOKING â€" You were bombarded last month for reasons why this habit should end. But if you CANNOT give up: smoke filters with progressively less tar, try for under five cigarettes per day, try not to inhale STRESS â€" Acute emotion may precipiâ€" tate angina ‘(a condition in which the _fFeedback "It‘s better to have it legal than have people getting illegal abor tions. Strenuous activiâ€" ty such as sports, exercise, or any other kind of excitement requires the heart muscle to work harder thus requiring m oxygen. If diseased blood vessels ict, the heart is deprived of oxygen, causing violent pain. â€" Guard against stress, trying to manage your lifestyle in a productive manner without undue haste or worry. â€" Cultivate methods of relaxation such as yoga, massage, or meditation. â€" get a good night‘s sleep EXERCISE â€" begin gradually if middleâ€"aged,, obese, or unhealthy â€" try to get breathless at least once each day (stair climbing, walking, houseâ€" work) â€" engage in a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes of vigorous exercise twice a week, complemented with a daily walk (unless you have been diagnosed as having angina). CONTRACEPTION â€" Women over 40 who have relatives with coronary artery disease, and women who smoke more than ten cigarettes a day, should avoid the pill and use another form of conâ€" traception if possible. The risks to dying of heart disease vary with each individual. There is one thing we can ALL do, however. Become aware of your heart this month and help the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario help others who may not have heeded these preventative measures. It offers reasonable rent. security. and downtown accessibility to pensioners. students. young marrieds. and others who could not possibly afford the excessive rents of newer buildings. I question this urge to ‘get clean.‘ It can be very damaging. and we don‘t have to look far down the road to see the results of that kind of thinking. Toronto is a disaster zone for affordable housing. even for reasonably affluent people Every time a useful, existing space is destroved in the name of ‘new . people are displaced by the prohibitive costs involved in rebuilding. leaving the builderiowner no choice but to charge much more. If a building is basically safe but an "eveâ€" sore," wouldn‘t it make more sense to work out a cost incentive plan from the city to encourage reasonable restoration or renovation. as a compromise between things people worry about, the No. 1 worry in most homes is about moneyâ€" Spouses argue about money more than anything else â€" the shortage of it, the unpaid bills The problems associated with money far outrank all other domesâ€" tic problems, so here is a formula for making the money you need. Of course, it goes without saying that carrying out the formula is the hard part, but, on the other hand, trying to work without a formula would be even more difficult. The answer to the money you need, like most other answers, lies within yourself, and there it must be found. In Emerson‘s essay on wealth, he tells us: "As long as your genius buys, the investment is safe, though you spend like a monarch". We have within ourselves the qualificaâ€" tions to earn the money we need. Our abilities are closely linked to our desires. One person may desire very little and have no problem in earning all that is Others might be constantly beset by dreams of greaness, of wealth, and all the things it will mean to them. If these are the dreams that come most often (and not related to a lottery ticket), but come naturally to them, this is what it is meant for them to accomplish, and somewhere in their native talents they can find the means of making those dreams come true Emerson also wrote: "There is always a reason, in the man, for his good or bad fortune, and so it is in making money Men talk as if there were some magic about this, and believe in magic in al} parts of life." _ If vou need more money, look for the means of acquiring it within yvourself{. I don‘t believe that the government should dictate to the people what is right or wrong for their bodies." tell us that, of all the WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 3, 1988 â€" PAGE 7 Steve Sydor Waterloo Geoffrey Fellows Maybe you have been going along, acting just like everyone else. Maybe you have never tried for the brass ring, the big gx;lile‘ If you don‘t want it, leave it alone. t if you do, go after it, stay after it, and you‘ll get it. There is no magic or secret prescription for earning money, but there is a univerâ€" sal law of cause and effect which dictates that our rewards in life atways match our service. If you want more money, you must find ways of increasing your service through finding a need and filling it, and the money will come, as a natural result. Money isâ€"relative and exists in abunâ€" dance. It is there for the earning and will be naturally attracted to those who serve (Mr. Fellows operates the Human Reâ€" source Development Institute, P.O. Box 642 Cambridge. First, decide on the amount of money you wish to earn and remember that word ‘"earn"; it‘s the key to the whole thing. Then start thinking of ways to increase your service, starting with the work you are now doing; the chances are good that there‘s a valid reason for choosing your present jab. But are you doing it the very best way you know how? The key to the income you seek may be lurking right under your nose. Apart from that, there are hundreds of ways to earn money in the home. It is quite common to read of large and lucrative businesses that started in someâ€" one‘s kitchen or basement workshop, by people who used their native talents to fill a need. an affordable place to live and some people‘s idea of beauty? We are young. medium and old. and have the rare opportunity of sharing a space we all appreciate. I am probably one of the few people who could afford to move from here, if necesâ€" sary. I wouldn‘t by choice. When I see the ‘trendiness‘ going on around us. I honestâ€" ly worry about the future of some of the others. I also worry about a city council that doesn‘t seem to see its own city, and who feel they have the right to make public judgments based mainly on taste. When we lose our appreciation of what is solid and good, though not perhaps beautiâ€" ful, we lose our humanity. Please allow the small pockets of community that are left. We can grow without destroying our heart. So, watch who you‘re calling an evesore will you? "I still don‘t think that it‘s right, because it is murder.
