/ftte.. lit) mu tii/tt Q Shkilnyk to speak at WLU Ron MacDonald Chronicle Special Tunnel of Love Bruce Springsteen Columbia Considering the new epic proportions of his popularity, it's only befitting that Springsteen should enjoy freedom of choice in any record- making decisions. So when the Boss says thereObe a change in company policy, who's to argue if he decided he's tired of politicizing and trying4o save jobs and wants to get a little Which is what he does on Tunnel Of Love. Closer in spirit and tone to Nebraska - for my money his most underrated record - he eschews the grand arrangements of his more popular records. The songs are simple in structure, yet display a masterful juxtaposition of optimism and pessimism, two dispositions that wind in and out of the recurring theme of love, introspective Such an approach doesn't offer much commer- cial appeal, but artistically, it's Springsteen's best record to date. Isn't it ironic that the Grammy nominators didn't notice. Drill Your Own Hole Gaye Bykers on Acid Virgin The group name and song titles - Zen Express, All Hung Up, So Far Out - suggest either an affiliation with Shirley MacLaine or adherence to some kind of retro-hippie philoso- phy, but I suspect these Brits have their tongues Firmly planted in the cheek area. With psychedelic bands popping up faster than doughnut shops, it's refreshing to discover Gaye Bykers taking the irreverent approach and making it work. Drill Your Own Hole recalls the glory days of acid rock, when bands such as the Amboy Dukes were responsible for a sub-genre that simultaneously glorified and mimicked the psychedelic drug experience. The 1tttl Night and Barry White Barry hits ' A&M _ With disco threatening to rear its head and rap f1rmly entrenched as a dominant social voice, it seems only ratting that the man partially responsible for both would want to share the spotlight. _ Granted, Barry White's sweet offerings dur- ing the 'hh, are innocuous when compared to the more militant approach of today's promi- nent rap stars. None, in fact, would ever cite White as an influence. But in his heyday, White carried a commer- cial weight aerponsiderable as his own girth. It was impossib e to listen to the radio and not hear the smooth rap stylings and breezy rhythms of "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "I've Got So Much To Give" or "You're The First, The Last, My Everything". Love and seduction were the running themes and no one could invoke love-making in words better than White. His massive frame made him an unlikely sex symbol, but housewives every- where felt otherwise. So why dwell on the past? Because "baby, baby, baby", Barry White is still "doin' his thing". The Right Night And Barry White is suspended somewhere around 1979 and the title says it all. Nothing has changed, but that's the way Barry likes it. Love is still the answer and as usual, there's no pretension in his delivery. White may be able to recoup the old fans but winning over a new generation is questionable. It won't matter to Barry, though. Love will prevail. N and served as the band's fact Cinder and negotiator, and pre- pared its claims for compensa- tion.
