Siskins‘ MacKay: A leader on and off the ice PAGE 32 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 13, 1988 Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff Like many northern boys before him, Waterloo Siskins‘ leftâ€"winâ€" ger Mike MacKay has eaten, drank and slept hockey all his life. But unlike others who have fallen into the trap of not looking past the next game, the 18â€"yearâ€" old Sault Ste. Marie native is intelligent enough to realize that hockey is only a small part of a person‘s life. "I‘m not going to be a profesâ€" sional player, so I look at hockey now as something fun to do while I‘m going to school," said the rugged rookie prior to a team practice at Waterloo Arena. Education is MacKay‘s first priority and he‘s obviously as comfortable with a book than he is with a puck. A Grade 13 student at Bluevale collegiate, MacKay‘s average "hovers arâ€" ound the 80 per cent mark." _‘"Whatever I can take out of hockey now is just a bonus." _ MacKay‘s original plan was to use a stint in the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League as a springboard to an American colâ€" lege scholarship. And while he‘d still go further south if the right offer came along, MacKay‘s beâ€" ginning to feel at home in Waterâ€" loo and has set his sights on attending either University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier Uniâ€" versity. ‘"You know it‘s kind of funny. When I first came down here for training camp I wasn‘t sure whether I liked it or not. But after Christmas (at home in the Soo) I couldn‘t wait to get back down here," he said. All this talk of education is not to say MacKay has not made his presence felt on the ice. Quite contrary. After 24 games, he has tallied 21 goals and 26 assists, Waterloo thirdâ€"top point getter. Playing all year with talented centreâ€"iceman Dan Rintche, the duo ‘has emerged as one of the league‘s most dangerous scoring threats. Dean DeSilva is the latest right winger to benefit playing beside the two. ‘"Danny and I have been cacrony | Oez _A frr AmicAgi| 1«° Gas Fireplace INSTALLERS CENTRE *with approved â€" 1418 Weber St. E. â€" 741â€"9489 (Continued on page 33) We offer the best in home comfort: *« No Wood * No Storage _ * No Chopping e No Ashes * No Electricity * No Burnt Carpets Kâ€"W‘s Largest Gas Fireplace Deaier | «* Gas Fireplace | i CENTRE l;gn;ul from Hi Way Market in Miniâ€"Mart Plaza) Mike MacKay FREE INâ€"HOME ESTIMATE AND INSPECTION HOURS: | Mon.â€"Wed. 10 amâ€"6 pm Thurs.â€"Fri. 10 amâ€"8 pm Sat. 10 amâ€"5 pm THE FOLLOWING ARE 6 WARNING SIGNS OF 1 3 Excessive hair loss â€" in shampooing and/or Drusming.
