Chronicle Staff Lawyer Stephen Woodworth is the first candidate to toss his hat into the ring as a mnominee for candidate of the federal Liberal party in Waterloo riding. Although the party executive has yet to call a nomination meeting Woodworth, 34, said he made his decision, after thoughtâ€" ful consideration over the Christâ€" mas holidays, to make his intenâ€" tions public. Having taken that step, Woodâ€" worth, who is a partner in Waterâ€" loo law office McGibbon and Woodworth, expects he will be contested by five or six other nominees. A tough battle also lies ahead in defeating incumbent Tory Walter McLean, who Woodâ€" worth expects will stay on as the Progressive Conservative‘s elecâ€" tion choice. s While Woodworth, a native of Kitchener, cautions he could hit on numerous topics of discussion he said his main concern, and one he continually refers to, is the Meech Lake accord signed last June. Because of the impact the accord will have on Canada, Woodworth wants to see Meech Lake discussions occuring alongâ€" side freeâ€"trade discussions. He also wants the public to be made aware of what the accord entails. By all indications, said Woodâ€" worth, the freeâ€"trade pact beâ€" tween Canada and the United States (he prefers not to call it "freeâ€"trade"" because he does not feel it is free) can be nullified in six months. However, the impact of the Meech Lake accord, beâ€" cause of its farâ€"reaching ramificaâ€" tions, would take hundreds of years to reverse. In particular Woodworth is conâ€" cerned about adverse effects to the Supreme Court of Canada and the senate. Both institutions, he said, could become diluted and less representative of the entire country if provinces are in a position to dictate who will fill eve CA D Lay 0 M gall and WUC Fashion$ bem$ cleared a! National programs will be fragmented and laws, which effect the country as a whole, will be applied inconsisâ€" tently depending upon a provinâ€" ce‘s view of a situation. Whether the Liberal party has the right leadership under John Turner, Woodworth stresses he has ambivalent feelings about that topic. "I have to admire (Turner‘s) internal strength and courage and I give him credit for that," Woodworth said of Turâ€" ner‘s comeback after the resoundâ€" ing 1984 election defeat at the hands of the Progressive Conserâ€" vatives. He adds: "I think he‘s capable of doing the job, but he has to get that over to the people."
