people stamping their feet to keep warm and beneath the cheers of pride as the Olympic torch moved into the centre of Kitchener Tuesâ€" day, stood a small band of protesâ€" ters drawing attention to what they feel are the inequities imâ€" posed upon a band of Indians in northern Alberta. The protest was organized by Hilary Rollingson, a thirdâ€"year University of Waterioo student, to create an awareness of the Lubicon Lake Cree Indian band‘s fight with the Alberta and federal governments and its attempt to keep oil companies off the land on which they live. While Petroâ€"Canada is not the only oil company drilling on the land located near Little Buffalo Lake, north of Edmonton, Rolâ€" lingson said the opportunity arâ€" ose to generate an awareness at the Olympic torch relay which is sponsored by Petroâ€"Can. "People are finding out about it and I think that‘s the main thing; public awareness," said Rollingâ€" son. Demonstrations have been held in Toronto, Halifax and Ottawa and are expected to conâ€" tinue as the entourage continues west to Calgary. NEW COMMERCIAL PROPERTY FOR LEASE Light industrial. The show, The Spirit Sings, glorifies native culture while the LuBbicon culture is «wbeing denied, she said. The picketers sported signs and walked in a small area across the street from the nu:e where the Olympic torch was displayed in a brief presentation with local govâ€" ernment officials and Pequan organizers. _ _ Rollingson said people stopped to ask the protesters about the Lubicon and were curious about the issue. There were also comâ€" ments from bystanders who didn‘t approve of their display and felt politics should not be a part of the festivities, she added. However, Rollingson said, "Polâ€" itics are already involved. We‘re just responding." PetroCan is getting publicity through its sponsorship and is promoting the idea of creating a united Canada yet it is involved in the disintegâ€" ration of the Lubicon way of life and well being, she explains. About 10 picketers stood before the masses celebrating the arrival of the Olympic flame into Kitchener Tuesdm{. The small group was rrotestlng Petroâ€"Canada‘s involvement in the destruction of Lubicon land in Northern Alberta. SAVE! THE SALES EVENT YOU CAN‘T AFFORD TO MISS!
