Univerlity footbnll: Two obvious guestiqns Till be asked as University of Waterloo Warriors and Wilfrid Laur- ierGoldenHawks taketothegridirmr for the 1988 Ontario Universities Ath- letic Association season. Will the Hawks advance to the Vanier Cup and will the Warriorswinagame?'l'heanswerto both questions is yes. Riding the um of quarterback Rod Philp - 1988's yet-to-be-crowned win- ner of the Hee Crighton trophy as Canada's outstanding university foot- ball player - Hawks will finally win the Western Bowl, following it up with a resounding win during a snowsz at Varsity Stadium. There's one team in the OUAA that Waterloo can beat next season - and they will. Warriors will settle for a missed fourth-quarter field goal (a single point) and defeat the equally-bad Uni- versity of Toronto Blues by a score of 5-4. Chalking it up to 'frscal responsibil- ity", Warriors will be coached by a second-year kinesiology student. Inter County Baseball: Dwindling attendance and the grow- ing trend we? major league ball clubs to locate lass A rdtilintos in southern Ontario will mean the end for Canada's oldest baseball league. The league won't die this year, but the 'Grim Reaper' is near. Waterloo Tigers will go through another season of mediocrity. Kitchener and District Soccer League: For the first time in its brief history, Waterloo Athletics reached the KDSL rarat.division playoffs in 1987. If the A's can resign most of the players for the coming season. they'll be good enough to advance to the second-round of the playoffs. Maybe even further. Miscellaneous fue.. The results are in black and white and nothing anyone does can change them. Chronicle' Staff But some things aren't so clear. Like who was Waterloo'ts best athlete for 1987? The co-winners for 1987 are Waterloo minor bantam Warriors and major midg- et Chevy's. Warriors earned the nod with a hard-fought six game win over Aurora to take the Ontario "AA" cham- pionship. Shawn Way scored three goals for the Warriors in the final game. including the game winner. Chevyrs captured the Ontario "AA" championship with a 4-3 win over Belleville. The win, combined with the Chevy's previous accolaids as Ontario Minor Hockey Association champions and hub league victors, made 1987 a pretty good year. Honorable mention goes to Wilfrid Laurier University'ts soccer team, which advanced to the Canadian champion- ships before dropping a heartbreaking SPORTS AT ITS WORST: Head coaches are commonly known as the kicking-cams of sports and unfortu- nately for two coaches, they both fell victim to the axe under questionable circumstances.
