Your government‘s stand on Sunday shopping was a gutless For heaven‘s sake, with your wellâ€"won majority, couldn‘t you and your pals with the red ties, have taken a stand in Toronto and kept Sundays for families? There is absolutely no need to skirt this issue, which evolves totally out of greed. Perhaps, if Queens Park had to match hours with what the retailers are proposâ€" "I can‘t wait until it‘s all over" was said to me in reference to Christmas. Certainly not the Christian attitude I expected to hear, but nonetheless a common attitude at this time of year. Christmas preparation â€" shopping, decorating, baking, visiting, etc. â€" is a time of stress. Often a stress so burdenâ€" ing it explains the surge of patients at peychiatric hospitals this time of year. I have certainly wondered what it is that makes some people so reactive to these stresses, making them nervous, tense and upset and, at the same time, allows other people to happily plod along. I like to assume that I personally do not give into stresses too dramatically beâ€" cause I am healthy and fit. After reâ€" searching stress books I discovered that most experts implied that increased exercise would reduce reactions to stress. At least unhealthy reactions. Kenneth Prkachin, PhD, a psychologist and assistant professor of Health Studies at University of Waterloo, has almost completed a study which will try to answer the question of how exercise relates to stress. The news angle of the study is that "nobody has effectively done a definitive study on exercise and its relation to stress." Apparently the chapters in the stress and exercise books were based on theory and assumption. As part of the study, sedentary people were divided into three groups â€" high intensity, medium and low intensity aerobic activity. Before beginning the physical activity, each participant was tested, using stress reactors to determine how their bodies responded to stress Three of the tests are as follows: _fFeedback i tmb . a P f ie 2 . e iDi e " f 3 x d ue : i se § W . nges io m ~*tog # C es 4 6 ~a j 3 e â€" M'u,‘ * ~< io s3 »t e hn 4 ‘l‘ e 5 5". o 45 . ;s m\ ‘A f & F .: % ‘,’) i . ;-‘ y i' h 6 P M e > ‘ itA on s3 Â¥3 « ce T c . What will the picture do for you? How will it affect {ou? What impact will it have on your ife? Will you be moved, perhaps even to tears? Will you laugh at a comedy, or feel terrified at the crisis faced by the hero or heroine? Will you feel wonderful waves of love :nd compassion, or surges of resentâ€" ment? All these feelings will pulse through you, and more. For the picture you will see is about the most fascinating person in the world â€" yourself. In this theatre, which is in the imaginaâ€" tion and heart of each of us, you are the producer, writer, actor or actress,, herâ€" oine or hero and the villain. You are the projectionist up in the booth, and the audience which reacts to the thrilling drama. The exciting story unfolding upon that screen is one which is invented every second of your life, yesterday, tomorrow, but most importantly, right now. You watch the image upon that screen and you invent the image upon that screen â€" right now. Will the story have a happy ending? Is it full of happiness and success, or sorrow and failure? The story line is already there and the discerning eye can tell the direction in which the story will go. But one realization can comfort you. Since you are the dramatist, the director, and the star, you can change the story as it unfolds. Now. This instant. You can conquer the villain ... and you can make this a heartâ€"warming story which will enrich the lives of all who know you â€" ratherr than a drab, mechanical tale, a chronicle of boredom. It‘s all inside you. It all depends on what you do with an image you carry inside you, an image which is your most important tool for good or ill. It all dgm::ds on you â€" and your selfâ€"image. is selfâ€"image is your own conception of the sort of person you are. It is a product of past experiences, successes and failures, humiliations and triumphs, and the way other people react to you, eslg:;ially in early childhood. m those factors, and from others, you build up a picture of yourself which you believe to be true. The picture may be false, and in many cases is false, but the imporant fact here is that you act just as if it were true. For all intents and purposes, it is true. If it‘s a good healthy, successful selfâ€"imâ€" age, fine. But if it can stand some improvement, you can change it for the better and start getting the kind of results such a change will bring about.
