organization of composers and performers, presented London artists Kristi Allik and Robert Mulder at the Princess Cinema. The third in a series of five NUMUS concerts, Allik and Mulder‘s riveting combination of photographs, computer images and "live" and sampled music was the only performance in the series to add visual ideas to the "New Music‘" which the concerts offer. Allik and Mulder‘s genre, which they call "integrated media," strives to improve on the multiâ€"media performance â€" in which one medium invariably dominates â€" by presenting "a true integration of two normally independent media" so that both receive equal attention. This is achieved for the most part through computerâ€"generated images and music, which allow the artists "to compose and perform sections of the workâ€"underâ€"construction together" in a form of ‘"instant partnership, Friday‘s audience heard and saw four pieces of thoughtâ€" provoking music and surrealistic or abstract images. The first of these, Cometose, dealt with "the death of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) during the perihelion of Halley‘s comet in April of 1910." Stunning and shocking images of past, present and future were brilliantly presented (almost animated) with Mulder‘s numerous slide projectors and various computer instruments. As a counterpart Allik‘s descriptive, often moving musical passages demanded equal attention. Through a story in which Mark Twain viewed his and our world, Twain‘s spiritual philosophy (carefully researched by Allik) was combined with strong statements from both The more abstract Rondeau, which "was conceived as the perfect vehicle for an integrated media work," did not achieve this integration as easily as its purely surrealistic counterparts. At times the music, particularly the bellâ€"like samples of its first movement, attracted more attention than the developing circle seen on the screen. At other moments, the abstract visuals required more concentration than could facilitate the enjoyment of the music. Of the four pieces, Rondeaun seemed most to appeal to either one or the other of the audience members‘ audio or visual senses. Alambic Rhythms, which dealt with "the gradual transformation of the earthly into the ethereal," best displayed the artistry of both performers, and best maintained the equality of their media. With true and beautiful representations of solid earth, corporeal and ethereal water (characterized in a spineâ€"tingling manner by the loon), and purely ethereal air, the piece struck a chord in both earthbound and spiritual sensibilities. The next concert in the NUMUS series, entitled "In Illio Tempore," will be presented Jan. 29 at the stART Gallery in Kitchener. eeeneneienerengienene‘ e‘ iene‘erelelele‘et Nee rieeanengremere t ene‘ele‘ 2 EeE‘ Children‘s Christmas celebration at Doon In the grand tradition of the 19th century Victorian Christmas party, Doon Heritage Crossroads will host ‘A Children‘s Christmas Party‘ on Sunday,, Dec. 20, from 2 to 3 p.m. _ â€" & The party will take place in the Hall of Fame where seasonal decorations and an elaborate Christmas tree will provide the backdrop for the festivities planned.
