PAGE B12 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 9, 1987 You might be familiar with Christmas recitals in which a proper collection of proper singers stand stiffly and sing proper songs in proper group harmony. The seven women of Distinction brought life to this traditional Christmas event through bright costumes, movement, expression, and especially through a few wellâ€"chosen humorous songs and stories. Now this is just the right kind of performance to bring in the Holiday Season. Seven talented singers, some Christâ€" mas lights, and songs that evoke that warm, Christmas feeling. Even Santa Claus and the Christmas partridge made guest appearances. Distinction is not a collection of starâ€"quality voices What makes this group interesting is wellâ€"rehearsed LARGE INDOOR SHOWROOMS ‘Tis the season to be Santa again We have all your Christmas makeup, wigs, glasses and beards. "m WESTMOUNT ROAD NORTH AT ERB, WATERLOO ensemble work. Their group vocal performance was flawless in both timing and harmony. Only in the solo work did any vocal weakness appear, and this merely emphasized that the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts. When not singing Christmas carols, Mary Minianovich, Heather Snell, Lynn McRuer, Karen Murâ€" rayâ€"Hopf, Kathy Robertson, Donna Pfeffer, and Norma Roper may be found singing at events such as dinner cabarets Two of the three sisters in the group provided solo and duet pianc and synthesizer to accompany the songs. The theatre‘s grand piano seemed most suited to accompany the music; the synthesizer sound was occasionally jarring and too loud. Nevertheless, how else could one bring a calypso "stee!l band" to accompany the song Calypso Allelu on the Humanities® stage without a little electronic wizardry? Christmas Hours: Mondayâ€"Saturday 9:30â€"9 There were a few technical problems during the performance, including some Christmas lights that wouldn‘t stay put and a slide show that couldn‘t quite be seen from the upper balcony. One of the accompanists was temporarily left in the dark backstage when a fullâ€"width movie screen descended from above, missed its mark, and went all the way to the floor, cutting her off from the stage lights. She played on in the dark, until the screen rose again to its proper level, and we never noticed a missed As with most productions on tight budgets, the technical support behind Distinction was provided by a very few hardâ€"working and multiâ€"talented individuals. Technical direction and design was by UW‘s own Peter Carette, who not only runs lights and sound for the group but is also the group‘s business manager, as well as working fullâ€"time at the theatre itself
