PAGE B2 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 9, 1987 difficult part of a bridge game. Good defensive plan and decisions are trademarks of an expert player. Even simple defensive decisions elude relatively experienced players because without seeing partner‘s hand they are not able to put declarer‘s options into a proper perspective. East‘s 7â€"3 (highâ€"low) in clubs should have informed West about partner‘s doubleton, number of clubs in declarer‘s hand and a proper timing of his club Ace play. There was no need to panic in view of the long clubs on the board and to try to cash diamond tricks, thus establishing declarer‘s Queen. West knew that his partner had at least five hearts. This meant that the Queen of hearts couldn‘t serve as an entry after trumps were drawn (declarer could not hold three hearts), so diamonds from declarer‘s hand could not be pitched. And finally, an attempt to ruff a diamond could have been countered by leading trumps anytime diamonds were led. It was so simple. All the defence had to do was sit back and not allow declarer to establish his tenth trick. Surprisingly enough, nobody was able to accomplish such a simple task. This hand was played at a Swiss Team Competition with predealt hands which means identical hands were played at all tables. Not even one defending pair managed to beat the contract.
