Chronicle Staff Elizabeth Witmer was one of 11 Kitchenerâ€"Waterâ€" loo women honored for their work in the community at the Oktoberfest Women of the Year awards held at the Valhalla Inn Thursday. Witmer, who won the award for Politics, is chairman of the Waterloo County Board of Educaâ€" tion. Since her election to the position in 1984 she has supported good budgeting and defended teachâ€" ers on racism and other controversial issues. She had been a school board trustee since 1980; her experience in public office led her to provincial politics. She was the Conservative candidate for Waterloo North in the recent provincial election. Other winners include: Gloria Simmons won the award for Business with the establishment of a licensed Infant/Toddler Day Care Centre. The first in Waterloo, Simmons coped with the building, organizing, financing, and licensing of the exm.:;d to be eom'g]lete by 1988. Bullerâ€"Wallace won the Professional award. Employed at Mutual Life, she works fullâ€"time for the employee assistance program and counsels employees with personal problems. Upon arriving in Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo she finished her education and went to work for Interfaith Pastoral Counselling Centre and Shalom Counselliné Services. She has been workshop coâ€"ordinator for the Canada Works Ann Roberts, a scnlptor whose work is known both nationally and internationally, won the award for Culture. Born in South Africa, she emigrated to Canada in 1960. Roberts received her BA in fine arts from the University of Waterloo and took her masters at Claremont Graduate College in California. Roberts was a founding member of the Waterloo Potters‘ Workshop. She, with civic and provincial politicians, gained a $1.3 million grant from the Ontario minist;z of citizenship and culture, a grant expected to be matched by the federal government. The money is beu;g.used for a national galler&’of ceramic art. The Canadian y and Glass Gallery, in Waterloo, is information on sexual abuse. A volunteer with the stian Medical Society in Canada, Kehl has assisted in orianizing eye clinics in Third World countries. She uses her own vacation time alygpays_herov_me}pen.esforthiswork. floor routine and a bronze medal in the individual allâ€" round contest. She is the winner of the Athletic award. A member of the Canadian Gymnastics team, Hiscott is in Rotterdam Holland, at an international competition. The top 12 teams qualifor the olympics in Seoufe Korea. Despite fourâ€"hoursâ€"aâ€"day of treatment for CIutic Fibroâ€" sis, Luanne Farwell, winner of the Youth Award, is a member of her church, the YMCA, and the Cystic Fibrosis Chapter. She is planning the annual carnival to raise money for CF. Mary Conrad, first viceâ€"president of the board of directors at Freeport Hospital, won the award for Comâ€" mum':{ Services. The volunteer position requires a great deal of time and responsibility to account for the hospital. Her 30 years of volunteer work have started and finished many projects; fundâ€"raising or patientâ€"oriented. _ In Yugoslavia Allison Hiscott won a gold medal for her Anna Kaljas, 75, received a special award in recognition of her work with the desetitute. The fourth woman to receive the award, she has already been presented with the Order of Canada. Kaljas, known as the "Snake Lady," has three houses on Frederick Street filled with hungry, homeless individuals. Churches and citizens donate clothing and other essentials which she needs to continue sheitering the homeless.
